  Shopping with my special needs child and I positioned her a certain way using the cart at the far corner self checkout so that she couldn't run off while I was checking out plus she could hand me the items to scan. The African American lady comes over and tries to move the cart and rudely says she needs to move from the corner because it may set off camera if im reaching a certain way to scan items if they are gonna be held in her hands before scanning. I replied as long as the items are being scanned that im not worried about a camera and I never had this issue before. She had already looked at me funny when I chose that register instead of the other empty registers and proceeded to try to move my cart over and starred at my child. I then gathered our stuff and went to a cashier because the lady at self checkout was making this already overstimulating shopping trip for my daughter take longer than it should. Not all disabilities are visible and not every African American shopper is trying to steal.

  To Food Lion Management: please train your staff better at how to engage respectfully with your customers. Yesterday around 4:30 I was at self checkout with one box of ice cream bars. For some reason, the woman monitoring self -checkout said loudly in an accusatory tone “ma’am did you scan that?”, as though I was trying to shoplift a box of ice cream. It was very clear on my screen that it was scanned and had my wallet out to pay. There are dozens of other ways she could have checked if I’d scanned the item rather than being accusatory and rude. Maybe that team member was just having a bad day. But for this interaction over a 5.99 box of ice cream, you’ve lost thousands of dollars in our business. We have lots of choices of where to take our hard earned money, and it won’t be here. Do better please.
