We visited Varsity Lounge (the old Sports One) today in celebration of my friend’s husband’s birthday. We found an advertisement on Instagram about a day party featuring several specials. We arrived around 5pm hoping that the “day party” would be well underway. Upon arrival, we were seating pretty quickly. It seemed that we beat the crowds. Our server came over to take orders. I asked her if there were any specials today. She hesistantly told me that there were no specials. I ordered a wine. My friend ordered a lemon drop and when the bartender came over he mentioned that he could make it any other flavor. I just told him that I was open to anything. He asked me if I preferred any specific liquor, I said “I don’t have a preference”. He brought the drink back and it was $20+. Simultaneously, we are sweating from the place not having air conditioning. We request to go outside to their sunroom area. Thankfully there were fans. We waited a little longer than expected for our food but it was good with large portions. Intermittently, our server came to check on us. Whenever she returned, she seemed a bit overwhelmed and sparingly responded to our requests (definitely with an ounce of attitude). While we were waiting for her one of her returns, I decided to go to the bar to ask the same question, “Do you have specials?” (I never trusted there served the first time). That time, the bartender told me that they had $5 a lemon drops on Sundays. Still shocked that the flyer was incredibly deceptive, I showed her the flyer that we found. She said that she didn’t know anything about those specials despite the flyer being on the company’s instagram page. Disappointed that I had been lied to, I told her that I paid $20 for a lemon drop and that I would like to speak with the manager. He came over rather quickly, as we were the bulk of the customers. He spent about 20 mins investigating and trying to explain how it wasn’t a recent flyer and that they don’t even have the things listed. (If I had to add my two cents, I think that they were taking advantage from of the little bit of business they had that day.) To add insult to injury, on my way of out the door, he told me that I paid $20 for a lemon drop because I ordered Don Julio. (mind you Don Julio was also on special for $10). Truth is, I never specified a liquor with the bartender. He automatically upgraded my liquor and charged me. In my experience, the typical decision at the bar would be to use the house liquor. The manager also ended with “Next time you might want to order exactly what you want next time.”
No compensation was made.
