Inspired by the wood-fired Robata grills of Japan, Mizu offers a refreshed take on live-fire cooking atop the Hyatt Centric in the heart of Charlotte’s SouthPark neighborhood. Led by the award-winning Indigo Road Hospitality Group, the rooftop restaurant combines the traditions of ancient Japanese cooking with Southern influences and Asian flavors. The chef offers a seafood-focused menu composed of wood-fired, raw, and chilled offerings, sushi, and shareable plates. True to the word Mizu’s translation to ‘water’ in Japanese, the space’s design takes inspiration from natural elements, which are incorporated throughout the chic, minimalist restaurant, and outdoor terrace with sweeping city views.

Limited menu if you can’t eat or don’t like seafood. Service was poor, ordered main with sides but the sides arrived 20 minutes before the main dish. Ordered drinks that never arrived.

This was a really bad experience. The waitress seemed like she didn’t care if we were there. The food was mixed at best. Had to send a steak back as it was overcooked (Medium rare ordered, medium well delivered). The tuna bomb was just ok, but it was mushy and bland. The second steak was medium rare inside, but it was completely charred and acrid on the outside. The carrots were 25% burnt to a crisp (they tried to tell us those ones were purple carrots, but they were just burnt regular carrots). The first martini we received was room temperature. After waiting what seemed like forever to ask our waitress for a replacement, we just walked up to the bar and asked for one ourselves. I should also mention that our drinks took 20 minutes to come out. Our waitress said the bar was really busy as an excuse. It was funny because when we had to go to the bar to replace our warm drinks, the bar was completely empty and the bartender said they were slow. The manager did try to make things better by bringing a couple new drinks, a free crème brûlée, and replacements for our worst food orders. Unfortunately, the food replacements were worse than the originals, the crème brûlée was oddly green and bland, and the drinks were very slow to arrive. On a positive note, the view from the terrace at sunset was nice, and the other customers were pleasant to talk to about the terrible food and service.

This was the worst experience I have ever had (or at least in the last 15 years). Terrible food (everything was burnt and the fish was off) and the service was mediocre at best. I wrote an OpenTable review, and the manager responded publicly that he would love the opportunity to speak with me directly about my experience so he could make it up to me. After having left two voicemail messages for him and also escalating to their parent group, Indigo Hospitality Group (out of Charleston, SC), I have had zero return calls or emails. I would never return and recommend you skip this overpriced restaurant with terrible food. Such a disappointment.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ We recently celebrated my husband David’s birthday at Mizu in Charlotte, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. One of the most thoughtful touches was arriving to find personalized menus printed with his name and a birthday message. It was such a small detail, but it made the evening feel truly special and set the tone for a memorable celebration. We chose the Curated Family Style Tour of Mizu for Two, and every course was beautifully prepared. The seared tuna was easily our favorite dish of the evening—absolutely outstanding and something we’ll be talking about for a long time. The ambiance was perfect. Between the music, the energy of the restaurant, and the spectacular views, Mizu created an atmosphere that made the evening feel both elegant and welcoming. We absolutely plan to return. The only suggestion we would make is to consider adding a sweet Riesling bottle option to the wine selection, as it would be a wonderful complement to the dining experience. Thank you, Mizu, for helping make David’s birthday so special. We can’t wait to visit again!

My husband and I celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary here, and we had an amazing experience from start to finish! A huge shout-out to our waiter, Julian, who was absolutely amazing. We somehow ended up discovering that we’re all from Miami, which made for some great conversation and a lot of laughs throughout the evening. He made us feel like old friends rather than customers. The food was delicious, and the Sake Sangria was so good that I’m still trying to figure out how to recreate it at home! Every dish we ordered was excellent, but the Brussels sprouts were the standout surprise of the night. I’m usually not a fan of Brussels sprouts, but these were absolutely delicious. Between the outstanding service, incredible food, and wonderful atmosphere, this was a memorable anniversary dinner. We will definitely be back the next time we’re in the area!
