Waitress name Kendall
I am writing to formally report a very concerning experience my boyfriend and I had at the Bonefish Grill in Cary last night. We left feeling extremely uncomfortable and as though we had been judged and treated differently because of the age difference in our relationship.
At the beginning of our meal, our waitress was extremely friendly and complimentary toward me. She told me that I looked like a famous singer, showed me a song on her phone, and was very engaging with us. She asked whether we were on a date or celebrating a special occasion and even offered to bring us a complimentary slice of cheesecake.
The interaction became uncomfortable when she began focusing heavily on our age difference, asked my boyfriend how old he was, commented that he looked younger, and made it very clear that she believed I was older.
We had not brought up our ages or asked for this type of personal conversation. I found it very inappropriate and unprofessional for a server to make our age difference such a prominent topic of conversation with us as customers.
After that conversation, the entire interaction felt different.
We also noticed that after the conversation about our age difference, the way she interacted with us physically seemed noticeably different. On several occasions, dishes or items were placed down on our table unusually firmly. We cannot know her intention, but combined with the change in her demeanor, it contributed to our feeling that we were being treated differently.
The most frustrating part came at the end of the meal. We had specifically asked for our check because we were ready to leave. Approximately 15–20 minutes passed, and we still had not received it.
During that time, the waitress came back to our table appearing unusually distracted and confused. She was holding what appeared to be several $20 bills and asked us, “Did you guys give me this?” We told her no. She then essentially said, “Oh, never mind, I haven’t even brought you guys the check yet.” Given that we had already been waiting for our check, this was a very strange interaction.
I want to be clear that I am not accusing her of being under the influence of any substance, because I have no way of knowing that. I am simply reporting what we observed: she appeared unusually distracted, confused, and disconnected from what was happening at our table.
At another point, we saw her outside while we were still waiting. We also noticed other employees/people walking by and looking in our direction. I cannot know what they were thinking or why they were looking, so I do not want to speculate. However, given the circumstances, it added to our feeling that we were being observed and treated differently.
Eventually, instead of bringing our check, the waitress brought us a complimentary slice of cheesecake that we had never requested. We ate some of it, but we were not waiting for a complimentary dessert. We were waiting for the check because we wanted to leave.
When the manager eventually came over, the manager reduced our bill from approximately $74 to approximately $56. I want to make it very clear that we did not ask for a discount or request that anything be removed from our bill. The manager chose to make that adjustment.
Despite this, we still left approximately a $30 tip. We were not trying to avoid paying for our meal, get something for free, or punish the restaurant financially. The discount was not something we requested.
I cannot claim to know the waitress’s intentions, but the sequence of events left us feeling judged and discriminated against because of the age difference in our relationship. What concerns me most is that this was not one isolated comment. There was an extended and very personal conversation about our ages and relationship, followed by a noticeable change in demeanor and a series of increasingly strange service interactions.
We came to Bonefish Grill to enjoy dinner together. We should have been able to do so without having our relationship and age difference made into a topic of conversation.

My daughter and I had a wonderful dinner experience tonight! Our waiter Luke was absolutely amazing, intelligent, polite and knowledgeable!!! He guided me on my meal choice and I’m glad he did, because it was delicious! Shrimp and scallop linguini. The manager Barbara introduced herself to us to make sure everything was great, AND IT WAS! The appetizers, drinks and main meal was delicious. Compliments to the chef and their team, the food was divine!. The bartender knows her stuff as well! There was another staff member that told us our selection of the pineapple cheesecake was a great choice, she shared her name but unfortunately I can’t remember. Overall…We’ll be back for sure and thank you for a beautiful experience!!!

What happened? Our overall experience was very disappointing.
My wife and I have been to Bonefish Grill many times, and it used to be an excellent place. This visit was very different. We arrived for our 5:30 p.m. reservation and were the only two people waiting to be seated. After more than 10 minutes, they tried to seat us in the first booth by the front door, in the bar area next to a large party, even though the restaurant was nearly empty. We immediately asked to be moved.
Our waiter was excellent, but the support staff and management were extremely disorganized. Service was in chaos- slow, and I noticed other tables experiencing similar issues. The food quality was disappointing, and the serving size was poor. My mashed potatoes were a small scoop for a $35 steak dinner. My medium steak arrived well done—it was so overcooked you could have hit it with a hammer.
When they corrected the steak, they took my potatoes as well. The replacement steak arrived without my potatoes. A staff member apologized and offered a complimentary dessert, but it was added to the bill and had to be removed.
The most disappointing part was the lack of management. When leaving the manager looked at us and said, “Goodbye.”
I was surprised by how much the food and service have declined. Unfortunately, we will not be returning anytime soon.
