I witnessed something very uncomfortable at this Food Lion today. While customers were checking out, the store manager, Stacy, spoke to two employees near the front of the store and said, “Does your cashier at register 3 have an attitude problem?”
The cashier at register 3 was standing close enough that it was clear he could hear the comment, especially with the managers volume. While she did not yell, it was said loud enough several customers, including myself, looked over at him and then back at the manager. It was uncomfortable to watch someone being criticized or discussed negatively in front of customers and within earshot of the employee himself.
I do want to recognize the two employees who were approached by the manager. They handled the situation calmly and professionally and gave their coworker the benefit of the doubt. They responded thoughtfully rather than immediately assuming there was an attitude problem. I appreciated seeing that kind of understanding and professionalism between coworkers in an uncomfortable situation, while the manager continued to push and impose her thoughts onto them even after their feedback.
A side note for management from someone who works in corporate America Human Resources: Leading with empathy and compassion can make a tremendous difference in how employees feel valued and respected. Everyone has difficult days, and everyone makes mistakes. Corrective conversations are sometimes necessary, but they can be handled privately, respectfully, and with dignity. The way leaders speak to and about their employees matters—not only to the employees, but also to the customers who witness it.
I hope management takes this as an opportunity to reflect on how employees are spoken about and treated, especially in a public-facing environment. And I hope the two employees involved know that their calm, compassionate response did not go unnoticed.

Have lots of great options and their international isle lives up to the name. Just wish they had tropical cheese and salami. Customer service is great. All workers are very helpful.
