- DBDrew BaylorJul 10, 20262.0My daughter and I stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon and waited behind a family of four. There was only one employee working, and we were happy to be patient. We weren’t in a rush, and I don’t mind friendly conversation. What became frustrating was that the employee never acknowledged us while carrying on a lengthy personal conversation with the customers ahead of us. The discussion included how Asheville doesn’t have enough locals anymore, how tourists can be frustrating, the high cost of rent, living with her boyfriend’s parents, and other personal topics. Even after the family paid, the conversation continued while she discussed giving them a local discount. Throughout all of this, she never once looked up, greeted us, or let us know she’d be with us shortly. Ironically, during the conversation she mentioned how many years she’d worked in the service industry and how skilled she was at it. Unfortunately, that wasn’t our experience. After waiting quite a while and seeing that a single scoop was over $8, my daughter and I decided to leave. Even as we walked out, the employee never acknowledged us. As visitors, I couldn’t help but wonder how the store owner would feel knowing this is the impression being given to customers. I understand enjoying conversation with regulars, but simply making eye contact and saying, “I’ll be with you in just a minute,” would have made all the difference.
