I went Saturday 8/1/2026 and I can't quit thinking about how bad the whole experience was. I wasn't even going to leave a review...but then Sunday morning I was violently ill.
Now that its a few days past and I'm feeling better...I figured I should let more of you know to choose this option with caution (especially if you are traveling and are expecting to feel well the following day).
I have a very strong stomach, I am a bartender, and I travel frequently. It is very infrequent that food affects me...this was something bacterial as nothing "tasted bad". From the level of service competence I witnessed, I'm not sure if it was the bartender or the kitchen who got me...but I got my gut contaminated after having the French Dip, onion soup, and 1 glass of wine (no water as it never was offered).
I'm the biggest restaurant apologist as I've done "the thing" for over 20 years. I expect places to be busy, I expect seasonal employees, and I'm aware I'm not the only guest to be greeted or helped but the whole experience was jumbled, poorly organized, and the bartender was pretty combative at the notion he had to get our drink order after a 15min outside wait, followed by a 15 min "no greet" table sit.
The bartender told us the first pass "the hostess should have got our drink order and everything else was his job"...he finally begrudgingly took our order, went back to talking to girls sitting at the bar about being a ex-cop...and then another 5ish min later explain to them "Uggg...I just forgot to make their drinks over there..hang on ladies"....
He sat down drinks, ran to the kitchen and dropped a onion soup without a spoon and ran away...then the food appeared, no silverware...no utterance of its arrival. When my dad had to stand up and go looking for anyone to help...we were told it was "being rolled up" as if we needed to wait for rollups to happen for us to get forks vs just handing over a fork and napkin while hot food was in front of everyone...salad never appeared or dressings...when asked for a ranch dressing for the chicken wrap my dad had...the bartender said "That was the last cup made up"...so it apparently was impossible to walk to the back and get a empty cup and fill it..IDK.
I could keep going...no refills, no engagement, no apologies...just some ex-cop who had a bad ethic and system for bartending/customer service. There were all kinds of dirty dishes on the floor and even a overflowing buss tub on one of the tables in view for our entire stay.
Honestly...the bad service wasn't enough for me to even write this review...it was the subsequent vomiting and diarrhea that brought me to do it. I was sick for 2 days and 1000% know it was the food (total non-digested evidence of black char pieces (meat??) and part of salad). I don't know specifically what happened...but I will absolutely steer clear of Tonnies if I am ever back in that area. The dishes could have even been the culprit. I don't think sanitation is on anybody's agenda from what I observed.
I should have known to skip...I even happened to look at the disgusting grease trap out back and all the messy clutter in the BOH outdoor/kitchen entrance area while waiting for our table...I muttered to myself "Dang, Toonies is grossssss, eww grease trap funk". I still waited with the family and ate there...intuition should never be stifled. So, low and behold,...I knew I was gonna get got after seeing the "operation"...enjoy with caution...I should have left after the bartender said it "wasn't his job", he was also right.
**edit**
I made a report with the local health inspector. Hopefully they come out and confirm that your kitchen cleanliness standards are acceptable for other guests. You wanted a "report" to listen to my concern...now you can be sure.
I'm still 1000% convinced it was your business who made me ill...maybe next time, just go with a apology. Now you need to prove it to others too since I alone wasn't enough to be concerned for. Good luck, wash your kitchen, and thanks for the bad time in Bellaire.
