  I was on a trip to Boothbay with four girlfriends from college (all in our late 30s now and we definitely do not look underage) and stopped in this Hannaford to buy groceries and wine. We had three bottles and upon scanning, were told that all four of us needed to show I.D. - no problem! Except I had accidentally left my wallet at our rental cottage. We were then informed by the young man bagging groceries, who was the one who demanded all four of us have I.D., that we could not purchase the wine. He communicated very curtly and rudely, refused to discuss this rule we were unfamiliar with, and never made eye contact. When he walked away, the older woman checking us out apologized profusely (and noticeably embarrassed by his behavior) and said obviously we were all over the legal age. I offered to show the verified Digital ID in my Apple Wallet on my phone and was told by the man that it had to be a physical I.D. Another member of our group went in after to purchase the wine solo and was told in a rude tone that our group had been denied, and we could come back the next day if we wanted. Obviously, we did not return to this grocery store. We went to a local wine store in downtown Boothbay, explained the situation, and were told there was no such law that they were aware of. They agreed with how absurd it was. Might I suggest that if this is, in fact, a local law or store policy, that it be prominently displayed and communicated in a way that addresses the rule without treating customers (a bunch of middle-aged mothers on a relaxing vacation, at that) as if they are criminals.

  This Hannaford in Boothbay is acceptable when you’re in a pinch. The store is small, has limited items, not many options for seafood, steaks, other essentials, fruits and veggies look old and tired, a small container of sliced mango was $10 and looked mushy and old, and the store is super expensive. “Expensive” to the point that it feels like price gouging and taking advantage of the tourists and even the locals. I saw their lobster was $13.99/lb when it was just $8.99 at the market basket the day before. And their firewood was 2 for $20. When it was just $4.99 or $5.99 at other places and Home Depot. I felt so compelled in pointing this out because it’s truly disgusting what this grocery store is doing when it comes to pricing. When you need big, quality items for vacation, take the time to drive to Market Basket in Topsham; it’s maybe 35 miles, but it’s worth every penny. I’m never going back.

  A decent grocery store. If you're out of state, they sell wine, beer, and liquor as well at the same store.

  Surprised by the reasonable prices of the only grocery store in town. They have beer, wine, and liquor.

  I’m not sure how this store maintains such a high rating. I’ve been trying for several days to find Diet Coke cans, but they’re consistently out of stock. The selection overall is quite limited; no Perrier water, and the mixed nuts are noticeably overpriced. The ones that were on sale sold out quickly and haven’t been restocked. It’s unfortunate there’s no real competition in town, as it would help address these ongoing inventory and pricing issues.”
