I very seldom leave reviews when I’m dissatisfied with an establishment or its service. I’m constantly on the go for work and eat out often, so I usually move on without saying much. However, this was one of the few times I genuinely felt that my health was at risk because of how the staff handled my food and how they handled my complaint afterward.
I’ve been to this location a few times before, and my past experiences were not great. I’ve passed by this location many times and, honestly, today I should have trusted my gut instinct and gone elsewhere.
When I walked in, there was a young lady with red hair wearing gloves and holding a bucket of water, appearing to be cleaning. She stopped what she was doing to help me, which I appreciated. However, she removed only one glove to take my order. My order included a donut, and she did not wash her hands before using a wax sheet to grab it.
After that, another employee informed me that the plain bagels were sold outat 11:30 AM! I thought that was surprising, but I said, “Okay, just give me a turkey sausage sandwich without cheese.” The employee preparing my food asked me a second time to confirm “without cheese,” and I said yes. I also noticed that he was wearing non latex gloves that appeared old and as though he had been wearing them for a while.
He prepared my sandwich in what felt like less than 30 seconds, which already seemed unusually fast. Then, after handing me my food, he scratched his nose with the wrist area of the same glove he had just used to prepare my sandwich.
At first, I hesitated to say anything because the staff has been nonchalant with me and other customers in the past. But today, I decided to speak up.
I told them I no longer wanted the sandwich and asked why neither employee had changed their gloves or washed their hands. I requested a refund. At that point, one of the women in the back began speaking in what she assumed I wouldn’t understand, saying, “If you go to his house, you’ll walk in and say ‘eww.’” Another employee then said, “Give him a refund and let him go.”
That’s when the situation escalated. I became upset, left briefly, then came back to address how inappropriate and disrespectful their comments were. As I attempted to leave, the staff appeared to try to block the door and prevent me from exiting, creating a hostile and intimidating situation. I had to physically move past one employee to get out because it felt like things were becoming physical.
When I got to my car, one of the staff members blocked me from entering my vehicle. At that point, I decided to call the authorities and also report the establishment to food safety officials.
Prince George’s County Police Department responded and provided me with a report number due to staff physically interfering with me and preventing me from leaving safely.
Never in my life have I experienced anything like this at a restaurant. Between the unsafe food handling, the disrespect, and the physical confrontation, this was completely unacceptable. I strongly encourage others to avoid this establishment.
