I’ve never had a worse shopping experience than at this Safeway. The anti-theft system they’ve implemented treats every paying customer like a criminal from the moment they walk in the door.
The shopping carts are apparently programmed to suddenly lock their wheels if the system thinks you crossed some invisible boundary. Instead of simply stopping, the cart violently jerks to a halt, which is not only embarrassing but genuinely dangerous. If you’re pushing a heavy cart or walking at a normal pace, it feels like the cart slams into concrete.
Then there’s the alarm system. The alarms suddenly flash bright lights and blast loud warning sounds while you’re walking out, even when you’ve paid for everything. It’s humiliating, disruptive, and completely unacceptable. The whole setup creates this atmosphere where innocent customers are constantly being monitored, scanned, stopped, and embarrassed.
And of course there’s the receipt scanning nonsense. After already waiting in line, paying, bagging groceries, and trying to leave, customers are now expected to stand there and prove they didn’t steal anything just to exit.
What really pushed this from annoying to absurd is that they lock one entire side of the exit doors after a certain hour. So if you parked near the closed side, too bad, you’re forced to drag your groceries all the way across the front of the store, leave through the opposite side, then walk back around outside just to get to your car. It’s unbelievably inconvenient.
Instead of improving customer service or staffing the store properly, Safeway chose to create a hostile environment filled with barriers, suspicion, and inconvenience. I understand stores want to reduce theft, but punishing every legitimate customer is not the answer. This location feels less like a grocery store and more like a poorly designed security checkpoint.
If these inconveniences aren't enough, digging through their "fresh produce" to find some that isn't rotting on the shelf or accidently picking up yogurt that expired a month ago is common.
Do not shop here.

Added receipt scanning is unreasonable and not needed. This is boardering with false imprisonment. Will not shop there again.

Every time I come to the Safeway to shop and try to get stuff from either the fresh food section where they sell hot foods or stuff from the deli it’s only one employee working both sections meaning that someone has to wait a very long time due to it being one employee working two different sections. This is fair to employees or customers self checkout is the same way only one associate at the customer service counter to help with customer service needs and self checkout

Despite having signs at the Pokemon vending machine to state loitering and trespassing isn't allowed, staff and management do nothing to enforce the policy. I come in daily to shop or grab a morning Starbucks and more often than not, am met with a group of four or more campers at the machine. With the new added anti-theft security around the store, it creates a tight walk space between the machine and the bars, and it's worse when a camper will refuse to step away from the machine because they don't want to "lose their place" as first in line at it. Even when you're trying to push a cart full of groceries through! It's a ridiculous situation to have to deal with every time I come in to shop.

Let me get this straight…
Safeway has rolled out a shiny new, high-tech anti-theft system where I now have to scan my receipt just to leave the store, because apparently I’ve been promoted from “customer” to “suspect.”
I would LOVE to know what that little sci-fi exit gate cost.
Meanwhile… the lettuce section has been living its best open-air farmers market fantasy for over a year because the refrigeration case still doesn’t have a door. And the carts? Half of them look like they survived a shipwreck, rusted, squeaky, and one wheel away from filing a workers’ comp claim.
But sure, let’s invest in making sure I can’t escape with my $3 yogurt instead of, I don’t know… fixing literally anything that actually affects the shopping experience.
Priorities. Truly inspiring. DO BETTER
