- ALAidet LaraAug 3, 20262.0My husband and I were using the self-checkout and had trouble scanning a bag of cherries. An employee (I believe her name was Branch or something similar) came over to help, which I appreciated. However, instead of explaining that certain produce items need to be looked up and entered manually, she immediately spoke to us in a rude and impatient tone, saying, “You don’t scan the fruit, you have to type it in.” My husband replied that we don’t normally shop at Giant, so we didn’t know how their self-checkout worked. Her response was, “That doesn’t matter. You should already know.” That comment was unnecessary and made us feel embarrassed. As someone who is Hispanic, the interaction was especially hurtful. We weren’t being rude or argumentative—we simply didn’t know how the system worked and could have easily been shown with a little patience and kindness. What made the situation worse was that after helping us, she spoke loudly to a coworker, saying, “They’re mad because they can’t scan the fruit,” making sure we could hear her. That wasn’t true at all. Nobody was angry—we were just confused and trying to check out. Customer service should make people feel welcome, especially when they’re unfamiliar with a store’s procedures. A little respect and professionalism would have made this a completely different experience.
