  This is a typical Martin's, basic selection but best in Cumberland grocery wise. My main thoughts revolve around being nervous to run into Roger (or maybe Richard, white haired cashier with a beard) while there. A few weeks ago, during checkout, somehow I think from a departing customer, there was mention of painkillers. I stated that I avoid them because of fears of addiction. Roger proceeded to say that people who overdose secondary to substance use disorder, should have been beaten more as children. I tried to explain, repeatedly, that I was from S. WV, the heart of the opioid crisis and that I personally had experienced death of someone. He did not care. He tried to insist he was more knowledgeable because he is a trauma nurse, odd place to meet one. The conversation devolved to me begging him loudly and repeatedly to please finish the checkout process as all items were scanned and I was waiting on him. In this conversation I attempted to point out other factors, yet he persisted in talking badly of such individuals. Aside from the wild inaccuracy of his comments, and obvious ignorance on the issue, I'm writing this for customer service. When a customer has to be the one to deescalate, while no management was in sight as an employee berated a customer on a social matter, something is wrong with the place. This is by far the wildest experience I've ever had buying groceries. Before this I thought the employees calling from pickup and criticizing us about their work hours because we were unavoidably delayed, was bad. I'll say the folks in self checkout are always helpful and kind. The people that are stocking and answer my questions have always been very helpful. It sucks they, and customers, have to hear loud robotic voices everytime someone walks up, over and over. Does anyone in management there care about customer experience? Probably not, they are too busy eliminating local jobs by employing robots with googly eyes and pushing as much automation as possible, while doing all they can to out compete any local offerings. Sad, truly. I go to La Vale 90% or up to Frostburg now. At least there we get professionalism.
