Middle Eastern food is one of those things that when I crave it, I want it now. And I’ll search and search for a menu that covers all the bases, from small plates to full meals, because who knows? I might walk in wanting a shawarma, but if something else piques my interest, that’s what I’m getting.
Yalla Mediterranean Grill is that kind of place.
I so badly wanted the chicken taouk wrap, but then I saw the stuffed pepper entrée. It was calling me, and it won.
There’s something about stuffed peppers that’s simple and comforting. It’s warm happiness on a plate, like a hug from grandma on your birthday.
While I waited, I watched a diner happily working his way through a huge wrap. I swear the thing had to be at least a foot long. Part of me wondered if I had made the wrong decision.
Then the waitress rounded the corner carrying my dinner.
How is anyone supposed to eat all of this?!
The plate looked like it was meant for two people: two green peppers sliced in half and stuffed with lightly seasoned ground beef, topped with their homemade tomato sauce. Alongside was a mound of buttery rice, grilled vegetables and a decent-sized house salad.
The peppers were simple, warm and comforting, which is pretty much what I want a stuffed pepper to be. No attempt to reinvent it. Just ground beef, pepper and tomato sauce doing their thing.
The salad was lettuce, red onion, cucumber and tomato with an olive oil and herb dressing. The dressing didn’t have much flavor, which initially disappointed me, but everything was fresh and, after a while, I was okay with it. There was already plenty happening on the rest of the plate.
We arrived around 2, so parking was easy to find, and the staff was attentive and friendly.
I went to Yalla wanting a chicken taouk wrap.
I never got one.
Apparently, I’ll have to go back.
