This evening, I placed a counter pickup order through the mobile app (details attached), and went inside. While waiting, I saw a father with his very young son attempting to place an order, the son was trying to place the order for himself. The employee “assisting” him - or rather verbally degrading and accosting him - was so abhorrently disrespectful and impatient.
1. Yelling at the young kid to clarify which letter of the value meal he wanted (e.g., 2A, 2B, 2C, etc.)
2. Telling them they should’ve placed the order at the kiosk
3. Yelling, “STOP STOP STOP someone else needs to take this order”, cutting off the young kid from speaking.
How traumatizing of an event this must be for a young kid, it was tantamount to bullying.
I could not stand by quietly and spoke to the other employee in front of me, bagging the UberEats and counter orders. I asked him “where is the manager?” and he told me that he was. I then pointed out the other employee’s behavior and he said, “I didn’t hear it”. Immediately, the employee accosting the young kid, jumps into my conversation with the manager and asks me what is the problem, and why am I bothering the employees, and he is going to call the police and trespass me.
Issue #1: poor customer service / disrespecting customers
I informed him that
1. I am not bothering anyone
2. the manager knows me,
3. so does she (I point to the woman at the fry station,
4. so does he (I point to the man who was at the drive thru window but now had replaced the unprofessional employee in taking the young kid’s order).
I said, but I don’t know YOU. He tells me that he’s the manager. I said, you are? because he (UberEats/counter bagging employee) told me that HE was the manager. I don’t think he realized I knew this and immediately backed down from his lie.
Issue #2: lying to customers
He then tells me he gets off in 10 min and that I can meet him outside.
Issue #3: threatening physical violence on a customer
He tells me as does the manager that “this is just the way he talks.” I said, this may be how you talk but when you’re in here, collecting a McDonald’s paycheck, you need to treat customers with respect and professionalism. I could not believe the manager was defending this. I hope the cameras in the store have audio for you to review the entire 5-min tirade.
At one point, he mimics my mannerisms, to which I inform him that YES I AM GAY. And tells me to get my panties out of a bunch.
Issue #4: discriminatory behavior
I asked the employee several times for his name to which he refused to provide. Now, if the employee thought he was absolutely in the right during this interaction, why would he refuse to give his name?
I left and informed him that I would be speaking to the hiring manager the next time I saw her, because like three of those employees who witnessed this, the hiring manager ALSO knows me.
I have been a customer of this McDonald’s for 20 years and I have never witnessed such disgusting, degrading, unprofessional behavior anywhere in my life - and directed at a young kid, NO LESS. Imagine how he speaks to the adults.
Again, I implore you to thoroughly investigate this and ascertain why this behavior would be acceptable in your establishment.
