I had purchased a large iced tea at a Dunkin’ in Beverly earlier that morning on my way to Gloucester. The tea tasted terrible—something was clearly not right with it. Since I was already away from the Beverly location, I stopped at another Dunkin’ while running errands to have it replaced. I brought the original tea with me, and it was still almost completely full with only two sips taken from it. Dunkin’ has signs posted in its stores telling customers that if they don’t like their drink, they will replace it. Apparently, that promise comes with fine print that isn’t actually on the sign. When I asked for a replacement, the employee seemed confused and asked how I was going to pay for the new tea. I explained that I wasn’t looking to purchase another one—I was asking Dunkin’ to stand behind the guarantee they advertise. The manager then came over and flatly refused to replace it because I had purchased it at a different Dunkin’ location. Seriously? I didn’t walk in with a Starbucks drink asking Dunkin’ to replace it. I walked in with a nearly full Dunkin’ iced tea purchased that same morning. I understand that individual locations may be independently owned, but customers see the Dunkin’ name, the Dunkin’ cup, and the Dunkin’ guarantee. If a location is going to display signs promising to replace a drink a customer isn’t happy with, then honor the promise—or clearly state on the sign that it only applies to drinks purchased at that specific location. Instead, I walked out without a replacement and with a very poor impression of this location’s customer service. Refusing to replace a simple iced tea probably saved this store a few cents. It also ensured that I won’t be stopping at this location again.
