My wife and I had and excellent meal here. I got the lobster tacos which small pieces of lobster tail. It was a little chewy but the flavors were too notch. Fries were excellent. My wife got the gnocchi which had a deep savory flavor. A little pricy but this place has potential! We will be back.

This place had been on our radar to stop in for a while. Having a craft food restaurant in the downtown area is a very welcome addition. Downtown Danvers, though traffic is horrible, needs more "upper scale" places to help the well needed face-lift. We went in on a whim on a late Friday afternoon. To my surprise the bar was almost full and the tables completely empty. That alone gave me a different than other Danvers restaurants feel immediately. So, for a Friday afternoon the bar was incredibly loud. As a person who lives between Danvers and SWFL, I found myself stepping out of the local and looking at the restaurant through a broader lens.
Let's start with the menu. The Craft in the restaurant name is very well deserved. Not only was our food exceptional, i spoke to 2 other people at the bar and the food was impressive. The menu was well rounded with a good mix of pub favorites and other entrée items. I didn’t see a true steak option (but I might have missed it) which was a surprise empty slot on the menu especially since most craft restaurants we go to have at least one craft steak on the menu. The special cocktail list was good with a few nice twists. I ordered a cocktail not on the menu which was very well made, though the lemon was a large wedge and not a proper peel with zest and the rim wiped in the zest. Even though the drink was well made and balanced, for a craft bar that little detail should matter more. I will talk more about the staff under service. Since I saw how good the patrons fish tacos looked, I went with the special lobster tacos. Even though the lobster meat was mostly knuckle meat and no tail the soft warm flour tortillas, the pickled onion, cilantro and sauce created an outstanding balanced taste that melted perfectly on the palate. Honestly, I have not had that good a taco in the Northshore area. My wife got truffle fries and the fried mozzarella. The items themselves where not over the top or stand out items for a craft food restaurant. What did stand out was the sauces that came with them. For the fries the garlic aoli was exceptional, I am not much on truffle fries but they where not overproduced with truffle oil and when mixed with the aoli it was outstanding. Again, the balance on the palate was spot on. My wife enjoyed the large mozzarella sticks, but it was the marinara that was the standout. It reminded me of a good New York/Northern New Jersey sauce. There is a New York grandma that wants her recipe back. Pair with well made meat balls would be a welcome menu addition.
Service and atmosphere which I normally would not group together is where the restaurant fell down for me. It seemed like we where the only people that the staff didn't know. Now that is a double edged blade. Obviously the restaurant has a certain "cult" following, as a new customer we didn't get the same overtly friendly service. Now, I must say our bartender was good many times we had to go out of our way to get her attention since the staff and regular customers where so engaged. It almost felt like going to a cocktail party and not knowing anyone and struggling to meet anyone. As anyone that follows my reviews knows, we always start at the bar as a good gage of the vibe of how the restaurant ticks. This felt like we stepped into a "click" and was somehow not as welcome as everyone else in the restaurant. This was extremely uncomfortable and honestly unexpected. Much higher end locations in Boston, New York, or in our other home in Naples FL and Miami I have never had that feeling even in very wealthy or private beach front clubs. Needless to say, if (and it is an if) this is the status quo I don't know how they will grow the client base outside of the click. I will surely do i follow-up review if our second experience is the same or different.
The food alone is enough to welcome a next visit. I really want a place like this to thrive in the downtown area and truly hope it does. Time will tell and I will let you know in the future.
