Really disappointing experience. The noodles arrived in a dense, clumpy mass at the bottom of the bowl instead of being smooth and fresh. To make matters worse, the beef was tough, gristly, and clearly low quality. Pho is a staple, but this bowl fell well below the standard of almost any other spot in town. I won't be back.

It was hard to choose what to get here -- so many different tasty sounding menu items! I will always order banh bot loc when I see it, and this one didn't disappoint. Very nice chewy textures. The oxtail pho had great flavor in the broth. The oxtail themselves were very small without much meat, mostly cartilage. So if the broth is the same, I would rather get a pho with brisket or rare beef, since the oxtail wasn't worth getting for the meat. I didn't love the flavor of the short rib bun bo hue broth, and it might just be because I don't like bun bo hue. I think I prefer a cleaner regular pho broth flavor. My brother got the seafood pho which I don't think was very good. I think the regular beef pho is the way to go here.

First time trying GAO after seeing it on Instagram, and I was really looking forward to trying this place. Overall, it was alright. The Bun Bo Hue wasn’t that great and didn’t quite meet our expectations. The Vietnamese iced coffee was also very sweet. I would say the duck noodle soup was definitely the highlight—it was really good! I wouldn’t eat the Bun Bo Hue if I go back but I would definitely have the duck noodle soup again. Service was good.

Great restaurant and the food is so good. After eating at the restaurant had to take more to eat. We had the hue oxtail beef soup which was delicious and banh cuon. I wish I could have more but live in Albany, NY

GAO in Dorchester is a standout Vietnamese restaurant that lives up to its name—“rice”—by delivering deeply authentic flavors and a warm, welcoming dining experience. From the first sip of broth to the last bite of noodle, everything feels carefully crafted and true to Vietnamese home cooking. I had the Hu Tieu and Pho Ga, and both dishes were absolutely bursting with flavor. The broths were rich and layered, with that slow-simmered depth you only get when someone is really paying attention in the kitchen. The noodles were perfect—chewy, resilient, and not at all mushy or disintegrated—so every bite had the right texture to match the intensity of the soup. One of the highlights was their chrysanthemum tea with Pandan , which was hands-down excellent: floral, soothing, and a beautiful complement to the savory dishes. The boba tea was out of this world as well, with a combination I’d never tried before and pearls that were tender and springy rather than overly soft or overly chewy. Service was wonderfully friendly, with staff who were happy to explain dishes, check in just enough, and make you feel at home without hovering. It’s the kind of place where you finish your meal already planning what you’ll order on your next visit. GAO is an authentic gem in Dorchester—a restaurant where the broths are deep, the noodles are on point, the drinks surprise and delight, and the hospitality makes you want to become a regular.
