TL;DR: I’ve given this place multiple chances and brought several friends here over the years. The food has always been average at best. Last night I paid $20 for an event that wasn’t worth it and got confronted by a manager who immediately threatened to kick us out over a complaint without even hearing our side. The situation was resolved, but the manager’s attitude never changed. Not coming back and wouldn’t recommend it.
I almost never leave bad reviews, but this place finally pushed me to write one.
My first time at Don’t Tell Aunty was for my 21st birthday. Friends had hyped it up for weeks and made it sound like one of the best Indian restaurants around. I left thinking the food was just okay, but it was my birthday, everyone was having a good time, and I didn’t think much of it.
Since then, I’ve been back a few times and have brought different friends with me. I gave this place way more chances than I normally would because I kept thinking maybe I was missing something.
Honestly, the food has never impressed me. For the prices they charge, I’ve never left feeling like I got my money’s worth. The butter chicken especially has always been disappointing. It tastes more like a generic sauce than actual restaurant-quality butter chicken. Every visit has been somewhere between average and forgettable.
What happened last night is the reason I’m writing this review.
My friend and I went to an event there and paid a $20 cover charge. The event itself was disappointing. The music was mediocre, the atmosphere wasn’t great, and it definitely didn’t feel worth the money.
We were still trying to enjoy ourselves though. We were hanging out, recording a few videos of the event, joking around, and just having a good time. At one point, a group of women nearby seemed uncomfortable, so my friend and I moved over to the bar.
A few minutes later, the manager came over. Instead of asking what happened or trying to understand the situation, he immediately started telling us that there had been a complaint and that he could have us kicked out. The whole conversation felt aggressive from the start.
What bothered me most was that nobody even asked for our side of the story. We weren’t causing a scene, bothering anyone, or trying to start problems. We were paying customers who came to enjoy the event.
I ended up talking directly with the people involved, and everything was completely fine. The issue got resolved in a normal conversation. But when I later tried to speak with the manager, he again started talking about how he was the manager and could remove us if he wanted to.
I’ve brought friends here multiple times. I’ve spent money here. I’ve recommended this place to other people. That’s why this experience was so frustrating.
If you’re running a hospitality business, the first response to a complaint shouldn’t be threatening customers before you even know what happened.
Between the underwhelming food, the disappointing event, and the way management handled the situation, I won’t be coming back.
All in all just be kinder to people, you are in hospitality and not every situation is the end of the world :) Be professional and kind, and not arrogant.
