I was truly disappointed in this Lafayette legend. I grew up going to Don's for many special occasions in my youth: birthdays, recitals, graduations, etc. I moved away, and was in Lafayette last weekend for a funeral. We decided to pick up food on a Sat. night. Granted it was an hour before closing, but that does not negate the fact that the quality of the food was absolutely horrible. We had ordered 3 meals: a fried shrimp platter; 1/2 fried crawfish and 1/2 crawfish ettoufee dinner; and a large fried catfish and shrimp dinner. First, the fried crawfish tails they gave us were like little rolling marbles. They were so hard, you actually heard them rolling around in the container when they brought it out to us. STRIKE 1! We had waited quite some time, but that was okay. It was obvious they were busy. We did not complain. However, when we did get our order, it turned out it was only the rolling crawfish tails and the fried shrimp platter. We had driven off when we realized that we had not gotten the large fried catfish fish and shrimp dinner. It was not in the bag. Luckily we were still in the parking lot, so we went back to curbside parking only to find our server running outside to flag us down. She said that the cook had forgotten to bring our order up. We waited another 25 minutes only to get 4 little catfish fish nuggets, fries, but no fried shrimp, nor coleslaw. Instead we got a container of rice and a container of what I assumed was possibly shrimp ettouffee (thinking they may have misunderstood). STRIKE 2! The young lady apologized and wanted to return it and have them correct it, but we had watched her wipe things down, close down her register, and had locked the doors. Other patrons were leaving. Obviously, the place had closed, so I told her not to bother. Needless to say, we were very disappointed. We had also given a significant tip. I did point out to the young lady my disappointment and informed her about the crawfish marbles. Again, she apologized and said that she would inform her manager. But the worse part was yet to come. When we arrived back at our hotel and began to taste the food, we literally had to spit out the ettouffee. I'm not sure what was wrong, but there was a taste that was off putting, not to mention the strong roux flavor that tasted like it was uncooked. STRIKE 3! Oh, and there was no crawfish tails in it, just tiny pieces as if they had cut the tails into little pieces to give the appearance of some crawfish. And guess what! That 2nd container that came with the fish, instead of the fried shrimp, was just another container of the same off putting crawfish ettouffee. STRIKE 4,5,6! We literally threw all the meals into the trash except for the fried shrimp platter that my sister had ordered. She was pleased with her shrimp platter. All I can say is that I'm glad I have those old memories of good times and good food from years past at Don's, because this was truly not something I care to remember. Nearly $70 in the trash. What a waste! Please talk to your chefs. Your reputation is what has kept you around all these years. Do better, please.

Ordered the shrimp appetizer to start. Mediocre fried shrimp. Would try a diff app next time.
Had a cup of chicken & andouille gumbo next. Delicious. Highly recommend. Seafood one was good too. Ordered catfish Acadian for main entree. Was delicious. Recommend for sure. Good seasoning and flavor. Had two Canebreak beers on draft too. And watched the World Cup from my table.

A Louisiana classic that absolutely delivers. The fried crab claws, fried alligator with honey mustard, boudin balls, and jacked up oysters are all must-orders — and yes, the alligator is as good as everyone says. The crawfish étouffée is also outstanding.
I don't normally recommend restaurants. But, this one is the exception. If you ever in Lafayette, LA, don't leave until you visit them a meal. The Cajun food was delicious, staff & service great. The building from the outside appearances, not much too look at, but interior was real nice.

Don's has been around for eighty years, has multiple locations and they know sea food.
The Pros:
Ample Parking
Easy to find
Great atmosphere
Knowledgeable and attentive staff
Clean but cramped bathrooms
Cons
The sea food is on par with other seafood restaurants in this range. You are not going to get a spectacular meal here. It will be good, but not memorable. Your best bet is to get the fried seafood.
What could have worked better:
Seafood Spinach Dip
We had the seafood spinach dip. We found two small (35-40 per pound size) shrimp in the appetizer. The corn nachos served with it were thick, cold and had an off taste. Better chips can be found at 95% of all Mexican restaurants, so I'm not sure what happened here. No, it was not an off day this is the second time we have had this.
I had the Catfish Acadian
It's fried catfish topped with crawfish étouffée served over rice. The fried catfish was fine. The etouffee was on the bland side,
My husband has the stuffed shrimp. He said it was "It was Ok, but I probably won't get it again. The fish and shrimp platter was better."
What could have improved it.
Better nacho chips
LSU developed a rice that's higher in protein, Parish Rice. Why not use and highlight that? It's a Louisiana developed and raised product.
Where did your seafood and catfish come from? If it was on the menu I missed it. Why not highlight Louisiana fish and Gulf caught fish and shrimp?
Don's is about atmosphere, the look of a more upscale dining experience and good fried seafood.
