I visited this location yesterday as it was late, I didn’t feel like cooking and my husband requested it as he enjoys Sonic, he visits there regularly as he loves their milkshakes although I have personally always found the food to be hit or miss and not reflective of the prices.
When I arrived at approximately 8:30ish PM there were approximately 8-10 cars ahead of me. I pulled into stall #12 I believe, I pressed the red button, and waited while the screen indicated that someone would be with me shortly to take my order. I waited so long without an answer that the system reset itself and I had to press the button a second time before anyone finally responded and took my order.
After placing my order, which totaled around $41-$42, I attempted to pay with my card. Unfortunately, the touchscreen in stall #12 was not functioning, so I was unable to select a tip amount. I pressed the button again to notify staff of the issue and was told that the carhop would assist me when she brought the order out.
Because of the screen issue, I had already decided I would simply give the carhop a cash tip instead because I didn’t want my card ran again. I had a $20 bill which I felt was more than fair for the size of the order.
When the carhop (Francis was her name according to my receipt) brought out my food, she handed me multiple drinks and bags. As she handed me the final drink, I asked if there was BBQ sauce in the bag. Her response was, "I don't know, I don't pack the bag," delivered in a rude and dismissive tone before immediately walking away. My hands were full of drinks at that point and I wasn't even given an opportunity to respond, ask another question, or hand her the $20 bill that was sitting on my console waiting for her.
I had my 6-year-old child with me and chose not to make a scene, so I left and called the store afterward to speak with management.
When I called and asked to speak with the manager, I was told, "This is her." I then asked for her name and was met with, "Well, what do you need?" before I had even explained the reason for my call.
I explained the entire interaction, including that I had intended to leave a $20 tip but was unable to do so because the card screen in stall #12 was broken and the carhop walked away before I could set my drinks down or say anything further. I suggested that if the payment screen in that stall is not functioning, perhaps it should be blocked off if employees are assuming customers are intentionally choosing not to tip.
The manager's only response was, "Well, did you get all of your food?"
That response told me everything I needed to know about the culture at this location. There appeared to be little concern regarding the employee's attitude, the customer experience, or the fact that I was calling to report poor service.
For me, customer service matters just as much as the food. I don't care how good the food is, if the customer service is poor, I have no interest in returning. Unfortunately, both the interaction with the carhop and the manager's response left me feeling that professionalism and customer service are simply not priorities at this location.
Very disappointing experience, and not one I intend to repeat.
