I am genuinely trying to process what just happened and give the benefit of the doubt...but this experience was unacceptable.
My family and I walked in, stood at the register, and waited an extended amount of time to place our order. Not one employee acknowledged us. No “we’ll be with you shortly,” no eye contact to even signal awareness, nothing.
One employee made direct eye contact with me while delivering ice cream to other customers, clearly aware we were standing there, yet chose to walk away and continue working on the other side. Meanwhile, another customer walked in after us and was immediately helped—kindly greeted, served ice cream with extra fixings, and given full attention.
We continued to wait while staff chatted amongst themselves, and the cook was visibly working hard. Still, not one person addressed us.
To make matters worse, the dining room was filthy. Tables were dirty, and instead of an employee stepping in to clean, my husband had to ask if he could wipe down a table himself....and they allowed it! That alone says everything about the level of service we received.
It wasn’t until I loudly told my family, “Let’s go, we’re not eating here,” that suddenly there was a reaction. The same employee who had made eye contact earlier came over acting surprised, while others commented that we had been standing there “for a while.”
That’s exactly the problem. You knew we were there.
I expressed my disappointment in the moment, because basic customer service—acknowledging someone’s presence—is the bare minimum. Instead, we were completely ignored while someone who arrived after us was treated with kindness and urgency.
As a Mexican woman standing there with my daughter, it’s hard not to question whether bias played a role. Whether intentional or not, that is how it felt, to be overlooked, dismissed, and made invisible.
The service, the cleanliness, the entire experience...everything about it was unacceptable. No one should have to question their worth or presence in a place they are trying to support as a customer. This was disappointing, frustrating, and honestly disheartening.
