Look, this is a Jimmy John’s.
You’re going to get a mediocre sandwich with probably not enough meat, but if you’re going to get JJ’s, get your JJ’s here.
Whatever this store is trying to do, they’re doing it well.
Six months ago you wouldn’t be acknowledged walking in, and might wait a half hour for a sandwich. Lately I walk in to a course of hello’s and a two minute sandwich. There’s suddenly always someone cleaning, handing out a bathroom key, or calling a greeting to a customer they somehow know by name.
I was pretty proud watching this store, which is a block or two from my job, somehow get it together, but yesterday I had a pick up order, and what I saw when I picked it up made me need to shout it: IF YOU EAT JIMMY JOHNS IN SOUTH BEND EAT IT HERE.
They were busy on Juneteenth, and when I walked in there were thirty people in line, all held up by an old guy who was trying and failing to use the app.
I was pretty annoyed about how crowded it was and how slow that guy was being as I tried to get to the pick up shelf to get my food, when I saw a young person with purple hair pull the man to the side and calmly and kindly teach him how to use the app while directing the other staff to start his order befoit even hit the system and keep the flow of business going for the other guests.
She could’ve told the guy to move, or try again later, but helped him use his phone and thought him the process all while calling him “Mr. First Name” and making sure he didn’t feel like a burden.
I’m not young myself, and my father is probably around that gentleman’s age, and has the same problems with technology. I love seeing young people (this was a teenager- maybe 16, with purple hair and glasses) so kind and willing to help out.
Above and beyond in all ways.
Whatever the owners are doing to get these staff on this track is working, and I wish it was going on at all of the JJ’s I’ve been too. This will be my JJ’s for life.
The bathrooms are shared among the building and require a key- they’re also disgusting.
The drinks counter is always sticky, and sometimes there’s a scared little girl at the counter who you can barely hear, but it seems like they’re finally trying to not be terrible.
