  The day before my dad’s funeral, I went to the mall to buy a pair of black pants. There’s often something cathartic for me about the anonymity of the mall, of being surrounded by people all set on their own missions, none of whom are concerned about who you are or what you’re there for. Yet, I cried my way through that shopping trip, lonely and unmoored, trying to imagine a world without my dad. And then I stumbled into the Cafe. I’d been once or twice before. I found myself at Keystone often in the months prior because my hairstylist was located in the salon suites across the way. But on this day, when no one else had seen me crying, and the anonymity of it all had begun to feel more like an anvil than a blessing, Miss Sonya saw me. She remembered my order. She called it out the second I walked through the door, and met me at my table with a goat cheese panini and a carafe of Coke because she knew I’d want a refill. She spoke gently, familiarly, aware of my tenderness in a way that reminded me I wasn’t alone. In that moment, I wasn’t invisible. My grief was shared. Maybe she’ll read this one day and know how much it meant to me. Maybe she won’t. But I guess what I’m saying is: Some people have their neighborhood pub or the quirky coffeeshop around the corner from their job. I have the Nordstrom Cafe. And there’s something kind of beautiful about that.

  The service was subpar, Sonya was friendly when she brought the check and asked if we wanted to add a gratuity . 2 out of 3 of our party did not eat their food, Sonya did not bother to inquire how our food was. The french fries were cold when we received them , the french dip au jus had spilled on the plate rendering the bread soggy and inedible. The mac and cheese was awful . The spinach and artichoke dip was very good. The panini was ok. Our ticket was $94 our experience was not even close. At the register I was asked how the food was and I answered honestly, awful. The young person awkwardly laughed and said "I am glad you hated it".

  Rude server told multiple people that they were out of everything. Server left before we finished our food.
