Neat little diner. Vegetarian/vegan food is good. Would have gotten 5stars but the gyro tasted the same as the Ruben. Needed different spices. But overall tasty. Service was top notch. Would visit again. Neighborhood was fantastic to stroll after eating.

visited The Chicago Diner, Lakeview during my trip to Chicago, and it was a fantastic experience. Even though I'm not a vegetarian, I was surprised by how flavorful and satisfying everything was. The restaurant has a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy to relax and enjoy your meal. I ordered one of their signature veggie burgers with a side of fries and finished with a slice of their famous vegan chocolate cake. Every dish was fresh, well-seasoned, and beautifully prepared. The burger was hearty, the fries were perfectly crispy, and the cake was rich enough that I couldn't believe it was vegan. The staff was friendly, attentive, and happy to answer questions about the menu. Their recommendations made choosing much easier for a first-time visitor. One tip: save room for dessert—the vegan chocolate cake is absolutely worth it. If you're visiting on a weekend, arriving a little early can help you avoid the busiest lunch crowd. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at The Chicago Diner, Lakeview. Thank you to the entire team for the delicious food, outstanding service, and welcoming atmosphere. I'll definitely be back!

The Chicago Diner has been serving meat-free comfort food since 1983, long before plant-based eating became a mainstream thing, and the Lakeview location in the Northalsted neighborhood carries that legacy with a classic diner feel, simple decor, friendly staff, and a menu that proves vegan food doesn't have to feel like a compromise. It's also proudly part of the neighborhood's LGBTQ+ community, pride flags displayed throughout, a welcoming space for everyone who walks in. We got the Reuben first, corned beef-style seitan piled with sauerkraut and melted cheese on marbled rye, and it genuinely tasted close enough to the real thing that it surprised both of us. The Thai chili wings came next, breaded seitan tossed in a spicy glaze, and they disappeared fast, packed with flavor and a real kick of heat. We also tried the spinach artichoke dip, creamy and rich, served with toasted ciabatta crostini that held up well for scooping. Someone in our group went with the mushroom and lentil casserole topped with a white truffle mushroom sauce, and reported it was one of the more comforting things they'd eaten anywhere recently, vegan or not. Shakes are a must here too, thick and genuinely good, the kind of dessert that makes you wonder why you don't order a milkshake more often. Portions are huge across the board, and the staff don't rush you out even when it's busy. Seating is limited, so going right at opening or making a reservation is worth doing if you don't want a wait.

So this is not my wife I 1st time at this dinner. Actually we use to go to the other location because it had more space. Also it tells a lot because we come here from Glendale heights. But this time I ask if we could be seated at a booth because I have lupus and my leg was bothering me and I needed space and there table are super small. I never use my disability as a excuse for any extra special treatment. I asked the host and she stated that the booth are for her larger parties. There was 2 booth available and she seated 1 couple in each booth. My wife andi decided to leave but before I left I asked to speak to a manager. The manager was pretty kind and understanding and said that they will definitely try to offer us a booth at this moment but while the manager is talking to my wife and I the host is laughing about situation. I was really over it at this point. I looked at her and said have a blessed day. She said back to me "honey we're doing the best we can". Such a lack of professionalism.
