  Horrible, never have anything in stock. Store is a mess, store director is a jerk, and the employees are not helpful. Produce department and meat market are empty all the time. 5 straight days in a row now! Ridiculous.. do better Chris!

  I’ve been shopping here for the last 10 years. Today is my last trip. Saturday afternoon and you guys have no baggers, creating long lines and I’m sorry, I I am not a Jewel employee, I should not be responsible for helping bag items when I’m already paying so much more for groceries and pay for the bags, too. Guess it’ll be Mariano’s on Lawrence from now on.

  I had a really disturbing experience at Jewel-Osco today. I went in just to buy an air freshener, and since I’ve never really bought non-food items from Jewel before, I was walking aisle by aisle trying to find where they keep air fresheners/car-type items. Shortly after I got inside, I heard that same PA code I’ve heard before—not just at this store, but at multiple non-diverse Jewel-Oscos. I’ve heard it enough times now that I genuinely believe it’s some kind of alert they use when they see a Black male shopping alone and assume he might steal. A few minutes after that code, a very old white male started following me around the store. He was doing the worst acting job ever trying to pretend he was on the phone. It was painfully obvious he was stalking me aisle to aisle, looking over his shoulder, watching me, following me through checkout, and then following me all the way to the exit door until I actually left the store. Once I exited and saw that he suddenly wasn’t “on the phone” anymore, I knew exactly what was going on. I went back inside to return the item because I was disgusted and humiliated. And when I came back in, all my suspicions felt confirmed: loss prevention was already up front, and the customer service agent already seemed hip to the entire situation, like they were expecting it. They even acted like they had to review my receipt, even though I had just walked out and came right back in. The worst part is that the store was full of people, so this wasn’t just uncomfortable—it was emotionally distressing and humiliating. I was made to feel like a criminal in public for doing nothing but walking through a grocery store looking for an air freshener. When I asked for the highest-ranking person in the store, I found out the man who had been following me was actually the store director Chris Carlson. There was no remorse, no apology, no explanation—just blank stares and more fake phone behavior. The customer service/front-end staff also had this accusatory and aggressive energy, like I was the problem for calling out what happened. That part is what makes it even more disturbing. If the store director himself was the person orchestrating or participating in this gang-like surveillance, then this doesn’t feel like one rogue employee acting on personal bias. It makes it feel like this kind of discriminatory racial profiling is accepted, tolerated, or even greenlit at the highest level of that store’s management. That makes it institutionalized, not accidental. I believe this needs to be investigated by corporate because this was coordinated between the store director, loss prevention, and front-end/customer service staff. That kind of ambushing, stalking, racial profiling, and gang-mentality behavior toward customers is unacceptable. It puts people through real stress and humiliation for absolutely no reason other than how they look.
