On May 9th, I went to McDonald’s to purchase a Happy Meal for my 4-year-old daughter. When I pulled into the drive-thru, no one took my order. I waited an additional 5–7 minutes before anyone came to the speaker. Even when someone finally responded, they took the order of the person in the other lane who had pulled up after me. I then pulled forward to the next window to let the employee taking orders know that I had been there first and had been waiting. However, no one was at that window. When another car pulled up behind me, I proceeded to the next window and they followed behind. When I reached the first window where an employee was present, I explained the situation. The employee went to get the manager. The night shift manager, who identified herself as Kierra, came to the window. I explained what had happened to her as well. She told me that I would need to drive back around the building because the employee could not take my order or payment from that window. I asked whether there was any way they could accommodate me given that I had already been waiting and had been overlooked. She told me no and instructed me to drive back around. By this point, the line had grown and cars were wrapped around the building. I asked why I would have to go back through the entire line after already waiting. She then slammed the window in my face and stated that she was not going to argue with me. I remained in the drive-thru because I requested to speak with someone else. She instructed the other employee not to open the window for me. While waiting, I placed a mobile order, hoping that would resolve the issue and allow me to get my daughter’s food. When I returned to the first window, another employee, whose name started with an “S” and who was wearing a black skirt, walked away from the window instead of assisting me. While I was waiting, police officers arrived because Kierra had called them. I explained the situation to the officers and informed them that I had placed a mobile order simply to get food for my daughter. The officers retrieved the food for me. Afterward, Kierra came outside with a smirk on her face and asked the officers if they wanted any food, stating that it would be “on her.” After the entire ordeal, my daughter was left frightened. She told me that we should never go back there and said that next time “we could just cook.” I believe the situation was unnecessarily escalated rather than handled professionally. Instead of making a reasonable accommodation after I had already been waiting and overlooked, the situation escalated in a way that caused unnecessary stress and left my child upset and uncomfortable.
