While one of the cashiers was very polite, the overall service during my visit was extremely poor. There seemed to be very little sense of urgency, organization, or concern for taking care of customers.
For context, my 90-year-old grandfather was hospitalized nearby, and I came in specifically to get him food because the only thing he wanted to eat was a sausage biscuit. I was under the impression that breakfast was served all day, but I was promptly informed that breakfast ended at 10:30 a.m.
That would have been understandable. However, my family had eaten at Jack’s the previous day, and the manager working that day told us that after breakfast hours, the only breakfast items they could not prepare were those containing eggs. Based on that information, I asked the cashier if they could make a fresh sausage biscuit. He went to ask the manager and returned to tell me they could not.
After updating my family, we decided to try a steak biscuit instead. Again, the cashier had to ask the manager, who this time said they could make one.
The cashier then asked if I wanted anything else, and I attempted to order a coffee. I was initially told they did not have any more. I asked whether they could brew a fresh cup. The cashier again had to leave to ask the manager, became occupied with something else, and eventually returned and told me they could.
Before leaving, another family member asked me to bring back a Coke. When I received it, another cashier asked me to let her know if it still tasted like Diet Coke because they had recently changed the supply after receiving complaints from multiple customers. I tasted it and told her that it did, in fact, still taste like Diet Coke. She wasn't sure why, so I asked whether there might still be Diet Coke remaining in the line from the previous supply. She attempted to cycle the dispenser but did not refill or replace the drink she had already given me before becoming occupied with something else.
I then waited approximately 10 minutes for my coffee and another four minutes before the cashier asked about my steak biscuit. The immediate response was that they were still waiting on it, but they then realized that my order had apparently already been prepared and set aside. The bag was handed to me without anyone asking whether I needed anything else.
I then had to remind them that my Coke still needed to be replaced. They replaced it, and at that point I could no longer tell whether it tasted like regular or Diet Coke, so I left. I was later told that it still tasted like Diet Coke, meaning I essentially paid about $3 for a Styrofoam cup.
I understand that restaurants get busy, and I am generally very patient when employees are dealing with a rush. However, having four or five customers waiting for food does not explain the level of confusion and disorganization I witnessed behind the counter.
More frustrating was the inconsistent information from different employees and managers. Simple requests repeatedly seemed to require someone to track down a manager, and the overall attitude made me feel as though my requests were an imposition rather than normal parts of serving a customer.
There was also virtually none of the basic customer service I would expect: no “yes, sir,” “no, sir,” “thank you,” “sorry for the wait,” or “is there anything else you need?” I don't expect to be treated like a king, but a little attentiveness, courtesy, and concern for the customer would go a long way.
Unfortunately, the dining area also did not appear to be clean.
Overall, this was a very frustrating experience for me, considering I was not even eating and was trying to do something for my grandfather, who was sick and only wanted a sausage biscuit. I was already stressed before entering that place and did not need more. The problem was not simply that breakfast had ended or that I had to wait; it was the combination of inconsistent information, poor communication, lack of urgency, disorganization, cleanliness issues, and an overall lack of basic customer service. The food was hot though.
