I am leaving this review because my experience at Virgil’s Gullah Kitchen & Bar in Midtown Atlanta was unacceptable, particularly when it came to the level of customer service and how my property was handled.
My party had a 1:45 PM reservation, yet we were not seated until approximately 2:20–2:25 PM. After finally being seated, we waited another 20 minutes before our server, Toni, came to our table to take our drink order.
When Toni finally came over, I was informed that the restaurant had run out of champagne for the remainder of the night. I had to change my drink selection to Moscato. While the service did improve somewhat after that, the overall experience had already gotten off to a very poor start.
Our bill came to $143 and some change, which included a $22 gratuity, and I also left an additional tip. Despite the delays and service issues, I still chose to tip because I understand that restaurant staff can have difficult shifts and I try to be fair.
Unfortunately, what happened after we paid was extremely disappointing.
I accidentally left my takeout food on the table. The tray contained a FULL side of macaroni and cheese, a FULL side of collard greens, a FULL side of yams, two wings, and two containers of hot sauce. I realized I had left it behind and returned within approximately 3–5 minutes.
I asked another server, who was also the bartender, about my food. She went to ask Toni what had happened to it. I was then told that Toni had thrown the entire tray of food away. Instead of her telling me, she responded as if she didn’t want confrontation and sent someone else.
What was most upsetting was not simply that the food had been discarded. It was the complete lack of empathy or concern from Toni when she was asked about it. I had literally just left the restaurant, returned within minutes, and the food was clearly a full, untouched takeout order that I had just paid for.
I understand that restaurants have food-safety policies, and if there is a policy regarding food left behind, I can respect that. However, there is still a way to communicate with a paying customer with basic professionalism and empathy. Instead, the situation was handled as though the food had no value and my concern was insignificant.
After spending $143+, paying a $22 gratuity, leaving an additional tip, and purchasing a substantial amount of food, I expected a much higher standard of customer service.
This was not about expecting the restaurant to replace my food. It was about how the situation was handled. Toni's response and lack of sympathy were extremely disappointing and left a lasting negative impression.
I am sharing this review because management should be aware that the customer experience extends beyond the food itself. How you treat people when something goes wrong matters.
Unfortunately, based on this experience, I cannot say that I received the level of service I would expect from an establishment of this caliber.
Thank you.
