I’m pretty much batting 1.000 on predicting failed restaurants and it’s always due to terrible service.
This place has great food and a perfect location and patio. I spend a lot and tip big. The service here is so bad and apathetic I never want to go there, it’s so easy to be polite and welcoming. This place will fail if they do not improve.

If you are on the hunt for legitimate, mind-blowing Northern Chinese comfort food, Northern China Eatery is an absolute must-visit. The star of the show is undeniably their handmade section; the Chicken Buns are pillowy-soft clouds packed with savory, flavorful chicken, while the Beef and Carrot dumplings feature that perfect, thick, scratch-made wrapper texture—especially if you drop the extra dollar to get them pan-fried for that ultimate golden, crispy crunch. Another massive standout is the Scallion Pancake, which hits the table shatteringly crisp, beautifully layered, and loaded with fresh scallion flavor. To balance out the rich, savory punch of these mains and their smoky, perfectly spiced Lamb and Beef skewers, you absolutely have to order the vibrant, herby Tiger Salad or the garlic-vinegar snapped Wood Ear Mushroom Salad from the cold starters. The energy here is authentic, the food comes out piping hot, and everything is made with so much care that you will definitely want to bring a squad, order family-style, and feast until your food coma sets in.
I really wanted to like this branch of northern china eatery but honestly it’s miles behind the Buford highway location. The food is always consistent and excellent at the Buford location; even the pan fried flat noodles were inconsistent when we got two separate orders of it (one had much more wok hei than the other and the later order was drowning in sauce). The fried beef and carrot dumplings (my favorite dumplings at Buford) were gamey at this location. The soft fried pork had a much thicker batter and most of the pieces consisted of 1/3 pork and 2/3 batter (thin batter and you can see/taste the pork with every bite at buford). It was also not seasoned as well as the Buford location. Green bean and onion dish was undercooked although the flavor was good. The one food highlight was the xiaolongbao which was consistent and delicious across both locations. Lastly, the service lacked here aside from the manager who did her best to rectify the situation. Our server did not understand the happy hour menu, inputted multiple food and drink items incorrectly, and ultimately it was painstakingly difficult to ensure that we received everything we ordered. Efficiency was definitely lacking especially compared to the Buford location as we waited over an hour and a half for shumai and pork steamed buns (consistency of the filling was very weird and unlike any Bao I have had before). I have to admit that I was surprised by all the five star reviews - maybe yesterday’s experience was just a one-off.

We ordered the vegetarian dumplings and my wife bit into a piece of pink meat. I looked and confirmed it myself. We flagged our server, who took the plate to the kitchen, and the chef came out to insist that what we’d found was fried dough, not meat. It wasn’t. We declined to eat the dish, paid for our meal anyway, and confirmed at home that it was, in fact, meat, most likely pork, which lines up with the pork-and-cabbage dumpling on their menu.
For what it’s worth, we also stood at the hostess stand about 10 minutes, staff walking past, before anyone seated us.
Came for a friend’s birthday! We were sat in the back room past the restroom and the restaurant itself was gorgeous but we had several issues.
1. Gnats everywhere
It even flew and died in my food…. It was so bad we had to ask them to move us to the front of house.
2. I ordered the crab Rangoon
For $10, they gave me some frozen distributor low quality crab Rangoons… even Panda Express’s crab Rangoon tastes better.
3. Cocktails
Way too sweet. I wouldn’t go here for drinks. I asked the bartender to redo my drinks with no issues. She was very friendly and great. Thanks for that.
4. Service
Our server didn’t know what a “sour” cocktail was. Which is fine, but she should probably learn as she works in a restaurant with a full bar. Though the problem we had with her goes beyond that. The orders we had didn’t get sent, (some of our appetizers did came out), but we had to re order 30 minutes in because it didn’t get sent to the kitchen at all due to some internet mishaps. Sure, but restaurant was empty and she didn’t think to check in 30 mins? And kept repeating that it wasn’t her fault. But that’s fine I can’t fully put that on her. We had a group of 12? So we got split to 2 tables, and she said she couldn’t split the bill in 2… as a server you should’ve split the bill based on the different table in the first place. Rookie mistake. Plus restaurant wasn’t flexible on this, disappointing and inconvenient for customers. Random foods kept coming to our table… who’s managing this place? Are the food not sent by tables? They had a total of maybe 6 tables in the restaurant, and they couldn’t even handle that.
5. Food
Xiao long bao was good. The rest of the food was mediocre at best. But what I wanted to complain was the “clay pot”. How are you going to call a dish “clay pot” and it’s just clear soup? Have the owners ever seen what a Chinese claypot dish is like? It is NOTHING like what they served. Just very wrong. And that claypot took over an hour. Some of us waited 1.5hr for our food!! And when we had to redo the order, the server told my friend, another 15 mins in that they ran out of one of the food they ordered, that’s a total of 40 mins of just not having the right order. Server rarely came to check on us after messing up our orders.
Not sure if the other location is this bad but do not go to this location… not worth it
