If you’re looking for a place where the staff treats you like an inconvenience the moment you walk in, the Tiki Bar on the Alafia River is exactly the spot. My family and I stopped in by boat hoping for a simple break—just drinks and dessert for my two young granddaughters. Instead, we walked straight into a masterclass in how not to run a restaurant.
The hostess set the tone immediately with a miserable expression and an attitude to match. Despite the patio being nearly empty, she told us we’d have to wait 45 minutes to an hour for an outdoor table. Her explanation? “We have reservations.” As if this place is some high-end, fine dining establishment instead of a half-full riverside bar. When we said we only wanted drinks, she suggested we take two children to sit at the bar. That alone tells you everything you need to know about their judgment.
We were eventually placed at a table with no menus, only to be confronted by a rude server demanding to know who sat us there, as if we’d snuck in and stolen the table. Another staff member came out, told us the table was reserved, and walked away mid-sentence before we could explain. The level of unprofessionalism was astonishing.
At the bar, things somehow got worse. One bartender—the guy with glasses and shorts two sizes too small—was openly rude, questioning where we were sitting and who our server was. He whispered something to the bartender who was helping me, and suddenly she had to close my tab because of a “shift change.” She knew it was a lie, I knew it was a lie, and the only person who didn’t seem embarrassed was the jerk who told her to say it.
Back at the table, our original server dropped off wings and vanished, likely annoyed that I’d ordered drinks at the bar. Thankfully, a new server eventually took over and was the only person in the entire place who acted like she cared about her job.
Let me be clear:
This restaurant is not special. It is not busy enough to justify the attitude. And it is absolutely not good enough to treat customers the way we were treated.
The staff looked miserable, acted miserable, and made sure everyone around them felt it. If management doesn’t fix the toxic culture here, this place will be another failed restaurant on the river in no time.
We will never return.

A little "Treat-Day" lunch alongside the Alafia River since I'm out of state for work next week.
Cocktails are... me: a Bourbon version of a Mai Tai. She has a Key Lime Colada.
Starter is Shrimp Toast with blackened Gulf shrimp, mozz , Chipotle Aioli on Pico, on chimichurri Cuban toast.
Mains are Bourbon Salmon for her and Grouper Tacos for me.
A slice of Mike's Key Lime Pie for Colleen and a B-52 frozen dessert cocktail for me (Kalua, Cointreau, and Bailey's).
All is outstanding and service backs it up too.

if i could give this place a 0 rating i would but one star will have to do. the service was absolutely terrible they were rude and very disrespectful. The host sat us at a table, and the server decided to come up to us and tell us that we couldn’t sit at the table that the host sat us at. they wanted to sit children who are younger than 10 years old at a bar (how disgusting) if we were only doing drinks OUTSIDE…. then the manager Jay tried to compensate our party which was greatly appreciated but then went back to the host stand to talk bad about my party and i heard it when i walked in to go to the restroom right behind him. Then the male bartender told the female bartender that we had a tab open with that she NEEDED to close our tab out because there was a “shift change”. as we sat and finished our drinks and appetizers she was still there taking new orders. everyone there had a nasty attitude and was just so rude you guys will never get my family’s service because this is a horrible place.

I live in Riverview and eat at Tiki Docks frequently with my family, and it’s usually always a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, one night was very disappointing due to an interaction with one of the bartenders named Ryan.
I simply let him know that a young lady across the bar was trying to get his attention, and he immediately became irritated and visibly overwhelmed. His passive-aggressive tone, along with cursing at me as he walked away, was highly unprofessional and honestly changed the way I view the establishment.
There are a lot of great waiters and waitresses there who provide excellent service, which is why this experience stood out so much. But if Ryan is serving you, be prepared for someone who gets overwhelmed quickly, becomes disrespectful, and struggles to control his emotions.

It wasn't bad but it was overwhelming great either. The drinks, I got the orangesiscle cocktail and it tasted okay. It didnt have that distinct orange creamsiscle taste. The beer had a lot of foam on the top. The tuna appetizer was decent. The grouper tacos were okay. Fresh. They just lacked a bit of flavor. The lobster rolls...also...just okay.
The A/V was broken inside. The service was okay. Our waiter didnt hover, but it wasn't above and beyond either.
It was an okay experience.
