I used to love McDonald's fish sandwiches back in the day. I rarely ever go to fast food joints these days because the overall quality has seriously declined since the pandemic. However, once in a while - about every six to nine months - hope resurfaces and the urge for a fish sandwich from McDonald's rises up, and I cave in to it. The next thing I know, hope is overtaken once again by disappointment and I'm left with self disgust because I KNOW better.
Today was one of those hopeful fish sandwich days. Through the drive-thru I go, ordering my sandwich and medium fries, greeting the sullen employee at window number one with exact change and a smile. Drive up to window two only to be asked to pull up and park as they're waiting on the fish to cook. Twenty minutes later, another employee comes out carrying bags of what should be fresh food - after all, they'd just cooked the fish, right? Shouldn't it be fresh? And I'm presuming they did the same for the car waiting behind me. The employee was much nicer, friendly, and after wishing her a good day, off I go, headed home as I munch on my fries. Although they weren't hot, they were not completely cold either, so that was a small win. Five minutes later at home, much to my dismay, I find that not only is my "freshly cooked" fish sandwich cold, it's also shorted half the cheese. That's right, McDonald's is now skimping on cheese, folks. They're ripping those little slices of processed cheese food in half and probably hoping people won't notice when they dig in to their meal. Nearly ten dollars for a mediocre fish sandwich with half a piece of cheese and lukewarm fries.
I read a good two dozen or more other reviews before deciding I needed to leave this one. Most of those are negative, and the response from the owner on just about every one of them was to ask folks to record their concerns at a website so they can be addressed. Problem is, nothing appears to be getting addressed as the poor reviews are spread over months and months of time.
So I guess my only recourse is to let the hope once again die, and should it ever come to pass that I desire fast food again, I'll just go down the road to Chick-fil-A where they do it right.
McDonald's, please, you can do better.
