This review makes me a little sad to write because I genuinely used to love Panera. There was a time when I ate here two or three times a week—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Unfortunately, every time I visit lately, the experience seems to be just a little worse.
We stopped by the Panera at Millenia in Orlando around 7:00 p.m. on a Friday evening—arguably the busiest time of the week in one of the busiest shopping destinations in Central Florida. The first red flag was seeing an almost empty dining room. There was only one other family dining there. Given the location and the time, that immediately struck me as unusual.
The restaurant itself also appeared to be showing its age. Dirty photographs on the walls, peeling paint, and an overall worn appearance made it feel like a very different place from the Panera I remember.
The biggest disappointment, though, was the food portions. I ordered a full tuna sandwich, something I used to buy and intentionally save half for lunch the next day because the portions were so generous. This time, each half had maybe a tablespoon of tuna, two very small slices of tomato, a few slivers of onion, and what looked like a tiny strip of lettuce, all on a noticeably smaller piece of focaccia bread.
We also ordered a Farmhouse Crunch Salad, a bowl of black bean soup, and a regular mac and cheese. Everything seemed significantly smaller than I remember.
Then came the real shock—the bill. For those four items, the total was over $50 before tip and around $60 after tip. For the portion sizes we received, it was honestly hard to justify.
To be fair, this isn't a criticism of this location alone. Over the last couple of years, I've noticed the same trends at multiple Panera locations: shrinking portions, rising prices, and a gradual decline in the overall experience. This visit simply reinforced what has become an increasingly common experience for me across the brand.
The frustrating part is that the food itself was still very good. That's the reason I keep giving Panera another chance. The flavors remain consistent, and there's still something comforting about their menu.
But when I left, I honestly felt more disappointed than upset. The experience reminded me of other once-beloved chains like Atlanta Bread Company and Corner Bakery. I sincerely hope Panera can turn things around because I'd hate to see it continue down this path.
For me, the combination of shrinking portions, rising prices, and declining upkeep has made what was once a favorite restaurant feel like a shadow of its former self.

I honestly can’t believe I paid over $18 for this meal.
I ordered a half Tomato Basil sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup, and this is what I received. First of all, I don’t know where the basil is, and I’m not even sure what kind of sandwich this is supposed to be. It wasn’t heated, and no one even asked whether I wanted it warm or not.
I’m not usually someone who eats at fast-food or quick-service restaurants, but this was a terrible experience. Not only was it extremely overpriced, but I genuinely feel ripped off for what I received.
They also gave me a piece of bread for the soup that looked like it had already been bitten, which I didn’t even touch. As for the sandwich, I only took one bite, and if you look inside, it looks awful.
Overall, a horrible experience. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Save your money and go somewhere else. For the same price, you can get much better quality food.
Very disappointing.
