The older Latina woman and the white woman who work there have always been very friendly and pleasant, so I’ve generally had positive interactions with them. However, my experience today was different. I was helped by an older Black woman who came across as rude and dismissive. After taking my order, she repeated only the drink portion. I waited a few seconds and then asked whether she had included the bagel I ordered. She responded, “If you let me finish, I wasn’t done talking.” She then repeated the entire order and told me to “pull up” in a dismissive and audibly agitated tone. I paid for my food and drink and left. To her credit, she did tell me to “have a nice day” as I was leaving, and I responded politely in return. I understand that employees can have busy or stressful mornings, but the way I was spoken to was unnecessary and made the interaction uncomfortable.
