Welcome to Koko by Bakan.
Nestled in the natural tree canopy of Coconut Grove, our 6,000 square-foot indoor and outdoor restaurant & bar transports guests to Mexico with its sophisticated and artistic design, cacti garden, and outdoor bar & terrace. Our 170 seat restaurant & bar conveys a fun, lively and warm environment to enjoy a true Mexican experience – from our open view kitchen allowing guests to witness the art of handcrafted tortilla making to our spectacular display wall showcasing more than 400 mezcales and tequilas.
The food and decor were amazing, but unfortunately the service and atmosphere took away from the experience. We came in during the day, around 12, hoping to enjoy our only day off together. We originally sat at the bar, but within five minutes we closed our check and asked to move to a table because the bartender seemed either like he was having a bad day or like we were bothering him.
While we were there, it seemed like staff was doing some type of inventory behind the bar. We noticed liquor bottles being married during service, loud staff conversations that we could hear from about 20 feet away over our own voices, and the person doing inventory was also stepping and standing on top of the bar right next to the service well. That honestly made us feel gross and uncomfortable.
Our server at the table was much better, but even after we shared that we were excited to explore the menu and drinks, there wasn’t much engagement or guidance. About 40 minutes later, we had our check and ended up walking a few blocks to CHOP to continue enjoying our day.
Beautiful place with great food, but the daytime service felt tense, loud, and disconnected. It was disappointing because the restaurant itself has a lot going for it.

Brandi was absolutely amazing! She provided exceptional service from the moment we sat down. She was attentive, professional, friendly, and made sure every detail of our experience was perfect. She had a great attitude, worked efficiently even while busy, and made us feel truly welcomed and taken care of. It’s rare to find someone who combines professionalism with such genuine kindness. Brandi is a huge asset to the restaurant, and we’ll definitely be coming back because of the experience she provided!

Koko has incredible energy, great drinks, and delicious food. Gus was our server - also, I think, an assistant manager - and I cannot recommend him enough! He had us start with the Tetelas ( $19 ) which were basically amazing house made blue corn tortilla cheesy hot pockets smothered in an incredible truffle sauce. The duck enchiladas were incredible - $24. The mango marg Gus steered me to was a chalice worth for $18 . I really want to try the outdoor space next time! Will be back.

So first off I’m going to warn you, make a reservation before you got to this restaurant. We arrived without one and were told to wait 45 minutes. Since we really wanted to try the food, we sat down and waited the 45 minutes and we received updates for the wait, and finally we were number 1 in the wait list. However, people that arrive later than us and had no reservations, were seated first. We walked up to the reservation desk and asked multiple times and were told me that we were to be seated next, however next never arrived. Others were seated before us and they kept saying we had a table that had paid but had not gotten up, honestly we said we were ok sitting anywhere, since we were aware we arrived without a reservation, however it was super unprofessional how tables kept becoming available and even though we were first we were never given a table and all because they decided they wanted to give us that specific table. I am truly disappointed with the attitude and response from the hostesses, would not recommend to anyone unless you have a reservation, you will not receive a warm welcome to the restaurant and prepare for over an hour of wait times.

Koko in the Grove is wonderful!
So happy to have this place So close to my house.
Beautiful and vibrant decor and atmosphere.
They have a variety of margaritas to choose from as well as other libations. We went with the Queso fundido To start with And then we each had two variations of the Mole.
I’ve been to a couple of other Mexican restaurants and Koko by far has been the best.
Not everyone can make a great mole, just sayin.
Another round of margaritas, please!, as we enjoy the people watching in this beautiful ambience.
We ended our meal with A wonderful bread pudding. I may have the name wrong, so please refer to the photo that I took just before digging in.
I want to call out the Great staff that works there.
They were all so friendly and serviceable, from the bartender to the waiter to the food runner. Got to meet them all and then they’re all super cool.
The manager came by and introduced himself and was so pleasant and personable that he chatted with us for a while. His name is Wilson (Like in “Castaways”) But more talkative.
Thank you, Wilson and our wonderful waiter for making this birthday celebration so special.
