As I sat enjoying my lunch and working on my laptop today (05/12/26), I had the opportunity to witness some of the best customer service I’ve seen in a very long time.
I was sitting not far from the register, where Heather, was taking orders, and with every single customer, regardless of how short, distracted, or even unpleasant they were…she found something kind to say. She complimented people’s outfits, hair, tattoos… small things that made people feel seen and appreciated.
At one point, a very rude and entitled customer began giving her a hard time, demanding free items and speaking to her rudely. Heather handled the situation with grace, patience, and professionalism. The customer stormed out threatening to leave a bad review, and shortly after, Heather even received criticism from management over how the situation was handled.
From where I was sitting, I completely disagree.
Heather handled that interaction with dignity and composure, then immediately returned to helping customers with kindness and patience… answering questions, helping people navigate the menu, and taking her time with those who were indecisive or needed extra assistance.
Her positive attitude, professionalism, and genuine care for people were unmatched, and I felt she deserved recognition for it.
Before I left, I made sure to tell her how much I admired her character, patience, and attitude. I gave her a tip and told her she was doing a phenomenal job.
Hold on to employees like Heather, Panera. People with that level of kindness, work ethic, and customer service are rare these days.
