We’ve been coming to Chicas Cuban Cafe in DeLand for years. I’ve brought family, friends, and even customers here because the food has consistently been great and the service has always been top-notch.
Unfortunately, tonight’s experience left us genuinely disappointed.
We had 4 adults and 2 children, split between two checks. The food was great as usual, and our waitress was very nice. However, when the checks arrived, we discovered that a 24% gratuity had automatically been added because we were a party of six.
What was most frustrating was that there was no clear warning or discussion about the 24% charge before we ordered. We were told about it as the bills were being handed to us.
I completely understand restaurants adding gratuity for larger parties, and I have no issue with fairly compensating good service. But 24% automatically added to a table of six—including two children—is excessive, especially without making it very clear to the customer beforehand.
When we questioned it, the manager’s response was essentially that this is normal and an industry standard. That was surprising. I've entertained customers here and brought groups here for years and have never encountered a mandatory 24% gratuity at this restaurant.
The unfortunate part is that we genuinely like Chicas. The food was good tonight, just as it has been for years. But policies like this make what has always felt like a great local, family-friendly restaurant considerably less affordable for families.
A 24% mandatory charge turned dinner for six into a bill that felt much closer to dinner for nine.
The food still deserves praise, but families and groups of six or more should be aware of the automatic 24% gratuity before dining here. I sincerely hope management reconsiders either the percentage or, at minimum, how clearly this policy is communicated before customers order.
First time here at Chicas Cuban Rest.
The service provided by Juan the best, he was attentive and personable, his was on everything, we never had to ask for anything - he anticipated our needs!
The Piña Colada was AMAZING!
The food was absolutely the best, even better than the famous Columbia restaurant In Ybor city, Tampa, Florida.
We will definitely be back, bringing friends and family with us!!!

I’ve been coming to Chica’s for years since they first opened at the other building. Unfortunately I have noticed that their food and service had gone down hill. They have removed items from the menu that we have been ordering consistently. The server acted as if they were inconvenienced to be working. It is very disappointing.

I used to love this place. They had my favorite breakfast, the Tres Leches, and it was one of the main reasons I kept coming back.
Unfortunately, my last visit was disappointing. I was told they no longer offer the Tres Leches, even though it’s still listed on the menu. My wife’s coffee cup also had lipstick on it, which raised concerns about cleanliness. Also my mom was with me and wanted honey in her coffee, the server brought the coffee with honey they added to it. Which is extremely weird
To make matters worse, the server wasn’t rude but had an attitude and was dismissive. Between the inaccurate menu, the cleanliness issue, and the poor customer service, this visit fell well below the standard I had come to expect. I hope they address these issues because this used to be one of my favorite places.
I added a photo of the lipstick cup

Ordered food to go. Waited at the to go window for at least 30 - 40 mins. The girl that took my order was leaving and noticed me still waiting and that's how I finally got my food. I was forgotten about. Smh. I ordered roasted pork with rice and maduros for side. I received onions with some bits of pork and 3 maduros. Also undercooked rice and beans. Unbelievable. The prices aren't cheap either. Overpriced and underserviced.
