Very Disappointing — Not Authentic Italian
I was extremely disappointed with my experience at Milane. I grew up in New York and lived on Arthur Avenue, and both of my parents were from Italy. I grew up eating my mother’s home-cooked Italian food, so I know what authentic Italian-American cooking should taste like.
First, the restaurant itself is extremely small—more like a closet than a traditional restaurant. Unfortunately, the atmosphere during our visit wasn’t pleasant either. For the first 30 minutes we were there, another customer was loudly arguing with someone in his party. That certainly wasn’t the dining experience we were expecting.
The food was even more disappointing.
We ordered the antipasto, and the olives were completely tasteless. The bread appeared to be nothing more than Publix-style French bread, which was another disappointment when you’re expecting an Italian restaurant.
I ordered ziti with marinara sauce. The pasta was badly overcooked. Several of the ziti noodles were split open, which is a pretty clear indication that the pasta had been cooked well beyond the point it should have been. Anyone who has grown up eating properly prepared Italian food knows that pasta should be served al dente, not soft and falling apart.
I honestly don’t understand the extremely high reviews. I’m not saying that other diners didn’t enjoy their meals, but based on my own experience, I found the food nowhere close to the authentic Italian cooking I grew up with.
For someone looking for genuine Italian food, particularly someone accustomed to the Italian-American food found in New York, Milane did not live up to my expectations at all.
