It’s a bummer to write this review but it needs to be done. Down in Bethany annually for the past twenty years, we were drawn in to the HOS courtesy some favorable Google reviews and timely social media posts. We were planning to attend music trivia night this past Tuesday but instead opted to finish out our vacation week at the restaurant.
We made a reservation on Thursday night for Friday, to be seated outside. Showed up on a beautiful night and got that spot…were very pleased. Max points for the atmosphere.
A very nice, well-intentioned waitress served us. She said English was her second language so be patient with her, but honestly, she communicated wonderfully. She was however, very slow with the service, with food and beverages coming in delayed and on top of one another. No napkins or silverware on the table, they came in way late. It was not clear whether any of this was entirely her fault, but nonetheless, several other tables seated in our vicinity were left hanging, with shoddy service. When she did appear, she apologized and asked us not to be mad at her, which we weren’t - we’re all human, yes? But none of this was OK.
We ordered some beverages and apps, took 30 minutes for them to show up, and by then she had taken our dinner order, which was delivered piecemeal, by a man, apparently the manager, who muttered, “I’m sorry, this is not my job.” We helped him unload and distribute the plates.
My wife never got her cheesesteak, while the rest of us sat with wings and burgers in front of us feeling guilty and progressively pissed.
The cream of crab soup was said to be unpalatable, under-seasoned with minimal crab.
Chicken cheesesteak dry, no cheese.
We were very excited for the wings…the hot variety we ordered for the novelty, they were either weak or there was actually no sauce on them.
Burgers were anemic, not a lot of flavor.
Fries and tots were good, pretzels were OK but the beer cheese was runny. Mac n cheese and sweet tea were said to be great.
We ultimately asked for the manager, something I don’t believe I’ve ever done. They took 25% off our meal which was appreciated, though we’d rather have just gotten a solid meal and reasonable service.
This was our last day on vacation and our last meal together, which we so wanted to be low-key and awesome; had no expectation of fine dining. We log this review due to abysmal service and a largely unsatisfying meal. And because of that, we may never return, which sucks.
In closing, it is well-known that food service is a very tough industry and the public is hard to please. But the good news is, in a resort town like Fenwick Island, if you run a burger joint well - make good food and provide fine service, the people will beat a path to your door. Servers can also make a bundle, even if they suck. And you can ultimately make a ton of people happy, vacationers with full bellies and timeless memories. They will come again and again.
Get your act together, HOS.
