  The North Canaan Stop & Shop is and has been consistently one of the worst Stop & Shop stores around. It has had issues for years, regardless of who the store managers are. The store is generally dirty, smelly, and the food is extremely hit or miss in terms of freshness. The floors are always very dirty and scuffed up with stains throughout the store. You can tell the floors are filthy just by looking at them. The bathrooms are dirty. The meat and seafood areas always smell horrible. There is always a foul odor coming from both the meat area and seafood counters. It’s especially bad in the warmer months. At times I have noticed a smell of rotting meat & fish mixed with bleach and at other times have noticed a strong sewage smell. Speaking of meat, the meat at this location is awful. There are always numerous brown, gray discolored meats sitting on the shelf. The last time I was here I saw numerous packages of gray meat, meat that had turned gray sitting in a pool of juice, packages that were ballooning and bulging, and several meats that were expired - well past the expiration dates. The meat section consistently has spoiled and rotten meats sitting on the shelves. The seafood is also subpar. As I mentioned, there is always a foul odor around and the fish doesn’t always look fresh - it usually looks old and dried out. The produce isn’t much better. Berries, vegetables, and bananas are very hit or miss and the salads are usually turning brown and are rotting on the shelves. In the aisles, make sure you check expiration dates on everything!!! Over the years, I have found expired protein bars, cookies, snack cakes, condiments, mayonnaise, salad dressing, sauces, baking cups etc… the list goes on and on. The dairy section isn’t any better. I’ve found expired yogurts, milk, cheeses, cottage cheese, sour cream… Same goes for the cheese section by the deli, I’ve found expired items there. The organic section is especially bad - make sure you check everything you plan to buy in that section. The store overall does a horrible job of checking dates regardless of the department. Whether it’s dairy, grocery, organic, produce, cheese, seafood, deli check everything very closely - and avoid the meat altogether. The lack of cleanliness doesn’t help. The store is usually understaffed and management is never around. The staff are friendly and try their best, but the managers are always changing and nothing improves at the store. There was one good assistant manager several years ago but they got promoted and transferred. Unfortunately, it’s hard to avoid this store as it’s the only major supermarket around but I would strongly recommend going up to the Big Y in Great Barrington if you can. It’s a massive night and day difference in every aspect. If you do shop here, check everything you buy and don’t expect a clean or well kept store. I wish Stop & Shop would fix this store up, but they have no inventive to as it’s the only store around with zero competition. The one in Winsted is just as bad, maybe even worse, with the same issues unfortunately.

  This place has a good selection of organic foods and vegetables. It would be great if there was more assistance in the store

  A very nice grocery store. Clean. Well stocked. Helpful and courteous staff. We like this store.
