Safeway 13th and Krameria Street, Denver, Colorado
I have watched this store's regard for the customer decline over several months now.
It all started with this location quarantining a section of the store to house health and beauty aids as well as household cleaning supplies. It feels like they are trying to herd cattle. There is only one way in and one way out. This area is crammed full of products, and the shelves are disorganized and messy. It feels cramped and is definitely an afterthought. I don't know how many times I entered this section looking for a certain cleaning product over several weeks before I gave up and went to another Safeway nearby. Also, when there are no lanes open and I will not do self-checkout, I have to walk down to this section to get checked out — hopefully without many people waiting with full carts. Safeway may have done this to prevent theft, but let me be clear: I am not a thief and don't like to be treated like one. The message it sends is loud and clear, and it isn't a welcoming one.
Next up is the pharmacy. This location is busy. I once asked a pharmacist for a recommendation and they looked at me like I had woken them up in the middle of the night asking for a snack — the look, the aggression. I took it with a grain of salt. Then sometime later, I received a text about a pharmacy pickup. I went to the counter to retrieve it and they said they didn't have one for me. I said I had received a text. They looked at me like I had lost my mind. I showed them the text, and they explained it was a notification that my script was running out, asking if I wanted to fill it. My error. However, instead of taking the bull by the horns without missing a beat, the response should have been, "If you can wait a few minutes, we can fill that right now if you wish." Instead, they passively aggressively and sternly asked if I wanted the medication refilled. I said yes — I was there for the medication; the answer was obvious. The interaction left a sour taste in my mouth. I have since moved my prescriptions to another pharmacy. I don't need the microaggressions and combative attitude from my pharmacy.
Lastly, the stocking of shelves. I purchased an item, and when I arrived home and started to use it, things felt off. I looked at the item and it had expired in 2024. I went back to the store, and while the front-end manager was helpful in explaining their process, the fact remains that I should never have to make that trip in the first place. I should have faith in Safeway ensuring that customers are getting the freshest product. It's an unspoken arrangement. It's trust.
For the most part, the associates I have encountered — checkout clerks — have been engaging and eager to be of service, and I have enjoyed the convenience of this store's location relative to my home. However, I have decided to choose another Safeway location that will treat me with respect and is dedicated to ensuring I am taken care of. When I am paying today's grocery prices, the least a store can offer in return is a decent experience.
