I had an absolutely awful experience with grocery delivery from this Boulder location today, and the handling of the situation from start to finish was unacceptable.
The roads in Boulder were closed this morning for an annual race that has happened for many years on the exact same holiday. Any competent management team should have anticipated this and temporarily paused delivery windows during the closure period. Instead, orders continued being accepted despite the store apparently being unable to fulfill them.
My original delivery was scheduled for 11 AM and never arrived. When I called around 12:45 PM, I was told the order had not been returned to the store yet, so there was “nothing they could do,” and I was directed to customer service. Customer service then informed me they could not void the transaction and that my only option was to wait up to 7 days for a refund after spending nearly an hour on the phone.
Because I still needed groceries, I placed a second order for later delivery. What arrived at 3:20 pm appeared to be my original 11 AM order - the one that hadn’t been returned to the store for two hours. When I called with legitimate concerns about perishable food safety, I was repeatedly interrupted instead of being allowed to explain the issue. I was told the food was “freshly shopped,” despite packaging timestamps clearly showing deli items had actually been packed shortly after 10:20 AM. The female manager insisted even after showing her proof of the time stamps that my food had been freshly shopped.
What made the experience even worse was the constant finger-pointing. The store blamed DoorDash and corporate. Customer service blamed policy. No one accepted responsibility for a completely preventable operational failure.
If store management does not have the authority to block delivery windows during known road closures, that is a major systems failure by the company. If they do have that authority and failed to use it, that reflects very poorly on local leadership. Either way, customers and employees were put into a stressful, avoidable situation.
I paid extra specifically for the second delivery during a time I would be home, and spent my entire day dealing with delayed deliveries, conflicting information, questionable food handling, and poor customer service. The one day I had available to rest.
This entire experience demonstrated a complete lack of planning, accountability, and professionalism.

During Boulder Boulder weekend, when so many Boulder businesses are out supporting the community, sponsoring events, and creating a positive atmosphere, Safeway chose to allow a predatory company (Colorado Parking Services)
to sit in the back of their lot booting cars and demanding $160 from people. That says a lot about what kind of business they want to be. Instead of contributing something positive during one of Boulder’s biggest community events, they turned their parking lot into a predatory cash trap. Completely anti-community and an awful look for Safeway.

I ordered $500 worth of groceries online to be picked up today and I was in and out in 5 minutes. Major props to the staff for helping out and making the experience a breeze! They helped bag and load my groceries which only took 3 minutes which was actually really impressive. Thanks for the help crew!
