I cannot believe the situation that occurred here last night. I pulled up to my neighborhood McDonald’s as I have for the past 20 years. All the lights were out except for the interior ones. I pulled up to the right side drive-through. And then someone pulled up behind me on the left side. As I sat there patiently waiting, I heard someone start taking their order instead. Then a woman got on my speaker and asked me to wait. I interjected that I was there first and why was I not getting waited on? A few minutes went by and then she came back on to take my order. She did not seem concerned that I was taken out of turn. I placed my order and then asked if the ice cream machine was working. She said no. I replied, “of course not.” She replied sarcastically, “thank you for your order and have a great night.” Wherein I replied, “I would if you would drop the attitude.”
I pulled around to the first window to pay. A young man took my card and mumbled some numbers. I asked him to repeat the total for me to make sure it was correct and he said $24 and change and verified my order. He ran the card and handed it back to me. I asked if there was an issue with the lights. He said that they had just blown out. I then asked him the name of the manager on duty. He mumbled something and I replied that she has quite the attitude tonight and as I took a breath to ask to speak to her, he slammed the door in my face and proceeded to take another order. I sat there and waited for him to open the door, but he looked at me and put the bar down as if I was going to climb out of my car window and attack him!
I then drove up to the second window, where a woman was standing. I asked if she was the manager and she snapped, “yes!” and I asked what is the problem here tonight? She started screaming that she was up front taking orders and the only person there tonight. I replied that that is not my problem and that I am the customer and I don’t appreciate her attitude. And she said I don’t appreciate your attitude and do you want your food or not? I said I paid for it so yes I do. She said then pull up. And slammed the door and put the bar down as well!
So I sat there and as she re-approached the window and refused to open it. I yelled that I wanted my money back and she disappeared again. I tried to call the phone number on the window but no answer as it was 9 PM. I decided to call 911 because she was not returning to the window and there was a line of cars behind me and one waiting in front. Clearly they felt threatened by me expecting decent customer service. I explained to the dispatcher the problem and gave all of my information. Finally, the manager came back to the window and handed me a refund slip and $25 cash and told me to get lost and never come back.
As I was shaking and still on the phone, I pulled into a parking spot and advised the dispatcher that the issue had been resolved, but that they needed to let the local officers know of the situation because it was very clear that if she continued to act this way there was going to be other altercations, and it could easily escalate.
Over the years, their customer service has declined, their costs have increased and the quality has lessened. After the pandemic began, they stopped serving salads 🥗 and grilled chicken. So now they only offer unhealthy Grade D beef 🍔 and the occasional ice cream 🍦 product when the machine isn’t broken or being cleaned during business hours. I rarely go there or to any location but I will never go back there again. The only thing that had been keeping me coming back with it location and the occasional wonderful service from the previous manager named Amy. She was delightful and friendly, and even funny. When I would place my order and hear her voice, it would make my day. The exact opposite experience that I had last night.
I have spent 34 years in customer service. It’s just like smiling. It takes less energy to smile 😀 that it does to frown. It is easier to be nice than to be mean. 😠
