⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 12 OUT OF 5 STARS, WHICH IS MATHEMATICALLY IMPOSSIBLE BUT SPIRITUALLY CORRECT
We had an upscale dinner tonight. We went to a concert at the Marquee Theatre. We had a nice hotel nearby. We were having a whole elevated evening.
Then, at approximately 10:00 PM on a Thursday night, we found ourselves wandering down Mill Ave in Tempe thinking, “We should probably eat something.”
This is where things took a turn.
Because if you’ve spent any time on Mill Ave, you know it can be a little… energetic. It is Arizona State University territory. There are clubs. There are college students. There are people making decisions they will probably discuss with their roommates tomorrow.
And then we saw it:
Prince St. Pizza.
Open.
At 10 PM.
On a Thursday.
Pizza.
Obviously, we went in.
Now, full disclosure: upon entering, we were not immediately convinced that this was going to be a five-star experience. Some of the pizza looked like it had been sitting there long enough to develop a mortgage. The location was giving “I probably shouldn’t ask too many questions.” We were mildly sketched out.
But we pressed onward.
We ordered one slice of everything that looked interesting because apparently that is our version of due diligence.
I got a vegetarian, vaguely margherita-esque slice.
Brandon got a thick, square, pepperoni-and-jalapeño situation with hot honey.
Then a gentleman in the back, who was literally washing pots, asked if we had ever been there before.
We said no.
He told the guy up front to give us an extra slice.
EXCUSE ME?
Who does that?!
We hadn’t even earned it. We were complete strangers. We had simply wandered in off Mill Ave looking hungry and slightly suspicious.
They heated everything up, we paid, thanked them profusely, and headed back toward our hotel.
And then, approximately one and a half blocks later, Brandon took his first bite.
Now, Brandon doesn’t even really like pepperoni.
His immediate response was:
“Super green.”
Me: “What does that mean?”
Brandon: “Super freaking delicious.”
Apparently we have invented a new culinary rating system.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
12 out of 5 stars.
Can’t count to 12, but we are prepared to try.
This pizza was legitimately fantastic.
Not “great considering it was 10 PM.”
Not “surprisingly good for a pizza place next to the clubs.”
Not “good because we were hungry.”
Actually, genuinely, really good pizza.
The crust. The toppings. The hot honey. The jalapeño. The fact that Brandon willingly ate pepperoni and then became its unofficial spokesperson.
All of it.
And honestly, the slightly sketchy first impression somehow makes the whole experience better. There is something deeply satisfying about walking into a place thinking, “Well, let’s see how this goes,” and walking out thinking, “Why have we not been here before?”
So if you’re wandering around Mill Ave late at night after a concert, a night out, or simply because life has brought you to this particular moment, go to Prince Street Pizza.
And even if you’re completely sober, well-rested, and not remotely in need of post-concert carbohydrates…
Still go.
Would absolutely recommend.
Genuinely excellent pizza. Unexpectedly excellent service. Free extra pizza from a guy washing pots.
Honestly, what more could you ask for?
Prince Street Pizza: mildly sketchy, wildly delicious, 12/5.
