I recently visited Safeway after receiving a $30 digital gift card through email. Since groceries are expensive and $30 does not go far, I spent nearly two hours carefully shopping, using the Safeway app, clipping digital coupons, and checking my “For You” deals to get the best prices possible. My main goal was to buy dog treats and maximize the savings available to me.
I normally use self-checkout, but because I had several digital deals and the gift card, I decided to go through a cashier line in case I needed assistance. The cashier was polite at first and even asked me to complete a survey for him, which I did. However, when I explained that I wanted to use my digital gift card, he incorrectly told me it could not be used in the store.
This completely ruined what had already been a long and time-consuming shopping trip. I specifically spent extra time using the app and planning my purchases, only to be told the gift card was unusable in-store. I asked to speak with a manager, and the cashier called over another young employee who claimed he was the store manager. I found that very confusing because he was not dressed like management, had no visible name tag, and did not appear professional or knowledgeable about the situation.
He also told me the gift card could only be used online or for delivery orders. I knew this information was incorrect because earlier that day I had seen an actual manager on the sales floor. After leaving frustrated, I later spoke with a female manager near the entrance who was professional, polite, and actually knowledgeable. She explained that the gift card could be used at self-checkout by scanning the QR code during payment. She also explained how to avoid issues by not mixing payment methods.
While I appreciated her professionalism, I was extremely frustrated that neither the cashier nor the employee claiming to be the manager informed me of this simple solution in the first place. Customers should not have to spend hours shopping, leave upset, and then receive completely different information from different employees.
After finally understanding how to use the gift card, I reluctantly went back into the store to at least purchase the dog treats I originally came for. The treats were advertised at 50% off, and I also grabbed a few small food items for dinner. I did not even bother getting a basket because by that point I was already irritated and just wanted to leave.
Unfortunately, after getting home and reviewing my receipt, I discovered that I had been charged full price for the dog treats instead of the advertised sale price. At that point, I was beyond frustrated. I immediately called the store shortly after 10:00 PM and spoke with another employee claiming to be the manager. She denied knowing anything about the earlier situation and claimed nobody had informed her about the gift card issue or the manager who had helped me. her advice was to personally return in the morning with my receipt for a refund. so basically spend $5 to jump on the bus to go get a $8 refund. how much sense does that make to anyone? I feel like this store is being ran with a not my problem attitude. honestly I feel like I should be compensated for all my wasted time and the slap in my face for having to come back and return the treats.
The entire experience felt disorganized, inconsistent, and unnecessarily stressful. I spent hours trying to shop carefully and responsibly, only to receive conflicting information from multiple employees, have trouble using a valid gift card, and then get charged incorrectly for a sale item on top of everything else.
This experience seriously damaged my trust in this store’s customer service and management communication.

Aaron was extremely rude and unprofessional. When I asked for help, he repeatedly ignored me and chose to assist other customers instead. When I tried again, he raised his voice and claimed he was helping others, which did not reflect what I observed.
The experience left me feeling disrespected and unfairly treated. I was simply trying to complete a pickup order on time, and the lack of basic customer service was very frustrating. And to be fair it was my first time coming here never again.

This Safeway continually allows pitbulls, large dogs, and dangerous dogs to roam inside their store. I see it everyday. I truly do not know why Safeway management is not cracking down on the amount of non-service dogs in this grocery store. It’s disgusting.
