First off - the food. Nothing we had was below perfect. Highly recommend the cowboy ribeye if it's available. The filet was outstanding, and for sides, go with the Brussels sprouts and whipped potatoes. Apps - steak tartare and cajun shrimp were excellent and would absolutely order again. The banana pudding stole the show at dessert. Everything we had was delicious and perfectly curated for our dietary restrictions. BUT - the most impressive part of the whole experience was the staff. Oak is by far the best, most attentive dining experience we've ever had, and we've had some amazing experiences. First off, Brandi, our server, felt like family. Cannot commend her enough. We had two kids (5 and 11) with us with food allergies (gluten and dairy) and she put together menu recommendations that accommodated everything they needed and they loved every bite. Chef Michael made us a wonderful grilled squash and lamb appetizer that was so good. And Brandi even got with Alex, their lead expo who is also a chef, to put together a special dairy free dessert for our youngest - a strawberry sorbet French toast that made her night! He presented it to her at the table himself and got down on her level to tell her all about it, and she felt so special. She never gets a fun dessert when we go out unless it is just something like fresh fruit because of her dairy allergy, so this was truly the highlight of the night. As parents, it made our night for our kids to be so well-cared for by the staff. Caleb, the GM, was so kind and so welcoming. He wanted to make sure that they went above and beyond to accommodate our needs, and he told us their motto is "We find a way to say, 'Yes.'" This is a meal we will not forget and look forward to returning as soon as we are able! If I could give ten stars, I would. Go to Oak as soon as you can!
I made reservations at Oak Steakhouse about a week in advance to celebrate my wife's birthday. We had a 6:30 p.m. reservation and arrived a few minutes early.
Our first challenge was simply getting there. Since Oak Steakhouse is located inside a hotel, parking was surprisingly difficult. There are very few convenient parking spaces nearby, and after finding a spot, we still had trouble locating the restaurant itself. You enter through the hotel lobby and take the elevator to the sixth floor, but we couldn't find any signage directing us to the restaurant and ultimately had to ask the front desk for directions.
When we arrived, the restaurant had a nice buzz but wasn't particularly busy. My first impression was that it was attractive but fairly understated—not quite the upscale atmosphere I expected from a premium steakhouse. I also noticed several empty tables in the dining room. A party of eight that arrived behind us was seated almost immediately, so I assumed we would be as well.
Instead, we waited 10–15 minutes. I finally asked the hostess if we should just grab a drink at the bar while waiting, and she immediately replied, "Oh no, your table is ready now."
Once seated, I realized they had prepared a birthday card for my wife that appeared to be signed by the staff. It was a thoughtful touch and something we genuinely appreciated.
Unfortunately, that's where the positive experience ended.
After being seated, we waited another 10 minutes without anyone greeting us. No water, no bread service, nothing. Eventually our waiter arrived—not with water, but to wish my wife a happy birthday. While the gesture was appreciated, we were still sitting there without the most basic service.
He then disappeared again.
When he finally returned, I ordered a glass of wine while my wife asked about one of the cocktails. He wasn't sure how to answer her questions, said he'd have to check, and disappeared yet again.
By this point, we'd been sitting long enough to take in the overall atmosphere. Rather than feeling like a fine dining steakhouse, it felt more like a typical upscale chain restaurant located inside a hotel. The dress code also seemed nonexistent. Three gentlemen seated nearby had clearly come straight from working outside, and while there's absolutely no judgment toward them, it wasn't the atmosphere we expected for a dinner that would likely cost well over $200.
I looked at my wife, feeling disappointed that this was becoming her birthday dinner. Before I could even say anything, she looked back at me and quietly said, "This doesn't feel right. This place is off."
I completely agreed.
I called Ruth's Chris Steak House, secured a reservation for two, and we decided to leave before ordering anything.
As we were walking out, the manager stopped us. Whether he had noticed how long we'd been waiting or simply happened to catch us, I'm not sure. He asked why we were leaving, and we explained that the service hadn't met our expectations and that the overall atmosphere wasn't what we were hoping for. He repeatedly asked if there was anything he could do to "take care of us," but never actually offered a specific solution. He simply told us to ask for him by name if we ever decided to return.
I genuinely wanted to like Oak Steakhouse and had been looking forward to trying it. Unfortunately, our first impression was disappointing. Between the confusing entrance, long waits despite having a reservation, inattentive service, and an atmosphere that didn't match the premium pricing, we decided it wasn't worth staying.
I can't comment on the food because we never had the opportunity to order. Perhaps it's excellent. But at a restaurant in this price range, the dining experience begins long before the first bite, and unfortunately Oak fell well short of our expectations.
