GREAT food. Service a little lacking in terms of some of the sides and our drinks we ordered weren't brought out with our meal. Understandable that they would forget something as it was mother's day. Met the owner outside after our meal. Very personable individual. I recommend the wings with rice & peas(Caribbean rice). My wife loved her fried pork chops with gravy on the side.

The chicken and waffle that was ordered for dine-in took approximately 40 minutes to be served...
While I was waiting in the dining room for the chicken and waffle to be served, I counted 4 dine-in tables that were seated after me and 6 To Go orders all receiving their food before me. Also, one of those dine-in tables finished eating their meal before I received the chicken and waffle order. Finally, once the chicken and waffle (served luke warm) were brought to me/my table, I had to ask for syrup, napkins, my beverage, and silverware. Please note: the syrup that the restaurant gave me with the waffle (size of a plate) was less than a teaspoon amount. Of course, I asked for more syrup and the restaurant staff told me the restaurant was running low on syrup...are you kidding me?
The restaurant staff never brought me the cup of ice I asked for; and it took me asking about 3 times to get extra napkins (more than the one I was initially given) from the restaurant staff.
Additionally, asking for a cup of water from the restaurant staff was another ordeal.
No one from the restaurant ever apologized to me or explained why it took 40 minutes for the chicken and waffle to be served.
Customer beware....
I will not return to this restaurant.
I would not recommend this place to nobody. The people didnt seem as nice which made the atmosphere unpleasant. To add insult to injury I placed a small order at 12:07 while I was around the corner and it said pick it up by 12:30. I arrived around 12:13 and they made me wait until 12:28 to get my food. The only thing that I ordered was a Jamaican Beef Patty and peach cobbler mjind you the beef patty was in the warmer on the counter and the peach cobbler was in the cooler so the girl at the register could have bagged my order and sent me on my way. There wasn't anyone in that place but a family of 3 that had been waiting 30 minutes on their food only for them to tell them that they were out of turkey legs. I waited for my food only to get food that wasn't fresh or good. I will never go back there. It's time to start holding these places accountable because we spend our hard earned money to support these places that doesnt value their customers. Please learn from this because its ridiculous
My wife and I were in Birmingham for a couple of days. We read about Jake’s Soul Food Cafe in Hoover on Google and decided to give it a try. We’re glad we did.
My wife had Port of Spain’s Curry Chicken and I had the Jamaican Jerk Chicken. Both were good and flavorful. The chicken was meaty, tender, and juicy. We both had “cabbage with soul” and fried sweet plantains for our sides. Both dishes came with sweet cornbread. The chicken was good, but the cabbage with soul and cornbread were the stars of the plate. Oh, man, that cabbage was mighty fine. We talked with the GM afterward and she said we have to try the Pork Chops with gravy and collards. When we make it back there one day we will do that. If you’re in Hoover, give them a try.
