I regret to inform you all that I recently endured what can only be described as a sociological case study in customer service failure at the Texarkana Taco Bell. I ordered at the kiosk like a civilized, technologically competent adult. When our food was finally ready, a young man—whose enthusiasm suggested he had just been personally wronged by the concept of employment—handed us our bag and fled the scene before I could request my drink cup or sauces. Both of which, I might add, were clearly printed on the receipt stapled to said bag. I politely asked for my cup. He handed it to me and immediately began walking away again, as though customer interaction were physically painful. I then asked for my sauce. He returned with a dramatic fistful of hot and mild packets. I clarified that I was referring to the verde sauce that accompanies the cantina bowl. He once again drifted away to be unhelpful elsewhere. I then asked a young woman for the verde sauce. She relayed the message to our hero—Young Taco, as I’ve decided his SoundCloud name must be. Young Taco proceeded to retrieve the sauce that, again, was explicitly listed on the receipt in front of him. He returned and asked, “Do you want green sauce?” I said yes, simplifying the terminology for efficiency’s sake. He then informed me that the packet was “avocado.” Yes. Thank you, Young Taco. I can read. It does indeed say “avocado.” It also says “verde.” We have arrived at the same conclusion. He gave me one packet. I had asked for two. Perhaps two exceeded the operational bandwidth for the evening. Upon returning to my car, I discovered there was no fork. No napkins. Only a light touch of spicy ranch on the Cheesy Gordita Crunch. And my cantina bowl appeared to have undergone portion shrinkage due to what I can only assume was inflation or vengeance. Halfway through the bowl, I encountered a hair. Not a delicate strand. A thick, black, unmistakably-not-mine hair. I was absolutely mortified. But wait. We must discuss the restroom. Immediately after ordering, I attempted to use the bathroom. My friend warned me the first one was “foul.” I foolishly tried the second. I did not fully enter before being greeted by what I can only clinically describe as a catastrophic biological event. Explosive. With paper towels. Piled. High. I did not get to use the restroom on this visit as could be assumed. Perhaps Young Taco himself had endured a trying evening that could explain where the mess in the restroom. Perhaps this explains his emotional detachment. However, not a single employee demonstrated even baseline customer service. We were the only two people inside. When we entered, there was one car waiting outside. That car was still waiting halfway through my (limited) meal. During this time, employees directed three additional vehicles to line up by the door—not the window—to await their food. So to summarize: two guests inside, four cars outside, and operational efficiency comparable to a Renaissance fair. This was the Texarkana location. I survived. But barely.
