After I asked for water and saw the charge on my receipt, I returned to the counter and pointed out that they'd charged me for a beverage. The response: "Oh, we don't have water cups." What a lame explanation. While charging beverage price for water is non-standard at restaurants, I could live with the policy if they had simply informed me in advance and given me the opportunity to decline the water. Instead, no warning beforehand and no empathy afterwards. This is not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things, but I suspect this incident reflects the restaurant's overall concern about customer satisfaction.
