Unacceptable and heartbreaking experience at this H-E-B gas station/convenience store. Late in the morning, around 9 a.m., while filling my car, I saw a woman dressed for work, clearly upset, crying, and completely lost. Her makeup was smudged and she was quietly sobbing near her car. When I asked if she was okay, she explained that she had run out of gas and came here because she believed H-E-B was a safe place to ask for help. She told me she went inside and asked to speak with a manager. Shockingly, the manager refused to come out to talk to her, even though he was just around the corner at the car wash. Instead, he told one of his employees over the phone to inform the woman that there was a “sweetheart policy” and that he wouldn’t come out. He also said she should “ask other customers for help.” That response was not only unprofessional, it was dangerous. How could a manager suggest that a distressed woman approach random strangers at a gas station for help? At that moment, I was the only other woman there, the rest were male customers (mostly construction workers). It was an unsafe and completely inappropriate instruction from someone in a leadership role. I ended up helping her myself. She simply needed a small amount of gas to get across Bandera rd. to her bank. She was polite, embarrassed, and grateful - clearly someone just having a very difficult morning. This situation could have been handled with compassion and common sense, but instead it exposed a complete lack of humanity and responsibility from the manager and team on duty. H-E-B often says in its ads that “no store does more,” but that morning, this location did nothing for a customer who truly needed help. That woman’s tears and the manager’s indifference are something I won’t forget. H-E-B, please train your staff, especially your managers, to respond with empathy and professionalism when someone asks for help. You lost a great deal of trust that morning.

It is 8:26 on a Monday night. It is not busy. The guy behind the counter watched me try to get cheese for nachos knowing it was empty and didn’t say anything in hopes that I wouldn’t ask him to do his job. How can you sit there and act like you don’t see me watching your customers struggle. It’s the guy woth a big belly, unshaven beard, glasses and a hat. Also there was other open bags of chips sitting there on the counter so this dude had been watching people do the same thing all night and couldn’t come from around the counter to do his job.
