I live around the corner from this HEB and come there often for gas and groceries. I especially spend a lot of money on gas here because I'm a nurse in the community and I drive for a living. I had to pick up something for my son one morning before work inside the store as well as fill my gas tank for my day so I pulled in the parking lot to get ready to take care of what I needed. Before getting a chance to go inside I was taking a work call that came in on my phone and returning a text in prep for my day, mainly because I don't like to be on my phone in public and I am talking about sensitive patient information during my calls so I can't talk about that information in public anyway so I had been in my car about 20-30min. I watched as the security guard who normally stands in the doorway to the HEB was trying to get a man who's car wouldn't start out of the parking lot, he stood there with his hands on his hips annoyed at the man. After he was done with him he came to my car and knocked on my window. First thing he did was aggressively start to verbally attack me asking me what I was doing there and he told me he believed I had been in the parking lot long enough and I wasn't allowed to sit in my car in the parking lot. I asked him a few questions. I asked him how long I had been there for which he had no answer. I wanted to know how much time was acceptable to him for me to leave my car and go into the store? Why as a 45 year old woman was he parenting me on how fast I move? How did he know I wasn't waiting for someone who was shopping inside the store? I informed him I would be going in the store shortly to buy something I needed and to fuel up however he wanted to know how long before I got out of my car because he thought I was better suited to leave the lot and he could give me directions to the nearest parking lot down the street that I can sit in. I told him to get away from me and he told me if I didn't like it that I could complain to the store manager. I went inside a few minutes later to complain and he was already inside explaining his encounter with me to the store manager. I informed the manager what happened and he was super apologetic for the security guards behavior and told me that no they are not supposed to be timing people to get out of their car fast enough for their liking or harassing customers. He gave me his card and the customer care number to file a formal complaint. I decided not to spend my money there as planned in the store or to fill up my tank and I went to Dollar General and Valero instead to take care of my purchases. Customer care took my complaint seriously and I'm still waiting to hear back on the results. In total between groceries and gas I spend $1,000+ every month at HEB. Like I said I drive for work so it's normal for me in the middle of my work day to stop at any random HEB to pick up something inside for lunch and I have eaten parked in my car in the lot where I'll be in public and safe and I have never, ever been timed or bereated by any other security guard. I have even stopped in the parking lot to take a work call where I know I'll be in public and safe and I've never had a security guard look at me funny or tell me to leave. And lastly I have sat in my car while someone I am with has gone inside to shop and never has any security guard told me I have been waiting too long and need to leave. This not only was unprofessional and highly inappropriate but I'm not sure why a security guard doesn't recall that we are in Texas, a place where it is dangerous to knock on car windows and get aggressive with random people. Lucky for this security guard he ran into me who only has a smart mouth and not a smart mouth and a gun having a bad day. If these guards are instructed to knock on car windows I would suggest they be re-educated to stop so they don't get themselves hurt or killed and HEB doesn't chase away loyal customers. I have also told other people in my neighborhood what happened and they are customers of that HEB or at least were.
